Descripción:
New York: Farrar Straus Giroux, 2004. Fine.. Signed first edition of this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, following the different ways three generations of white Christian Iowans oppose slavery. Written in the form of a letter from father to son, GILEAD recounts the struggles of the Ames family to reconcile their Christian faith with their methods of opposition to the institution of slavery. Former US president Barack Obama counts it as one of his favorite novels; he notes that the "gracious and courtly and a little bit confused" narrator Reverend John Ames is "one of [his] favorite characters in fiction" (NEW YORK REVIEW). 8.25'' x 5.25''. Original tan cloth-backed boards with silver spine lettering. Original unclipped ($23.00) color pictorial dust jacket. 248 pages. Signed by Robinson to title page. Jacket with slight bumping to spine ends. Binding spine ends a bit bumped. Shows nicely.

Descripción:
(New York): Dell, 1964. First edition thus. Near fine.. Dell mass-market paperback edition of Baldwin's second novel, a story of love and and fear that first revealed Baldwin's full capacities as "the greatest American prose stylist of his generation" (Tóibín). GIOVANNI'S ROOM is one of the great twentieth century studies of masculinity and sexual identity; in his creation of an expatriate American whose desires are weighted with ambivalence, shame, and anger, Baldwin proves himself a worthy successor to Henry James. The novel, Baldwin said in a 1980 interview, tells "what happens if you are so afraid that you finally cannot love anybody. That's what the book is about." 6.5'' x 4.25''. Original color pictorial wrappers, Dell 2881, cover price 60c. All edges stained green. 224 pages. Light edgewear, primarily at spine ends. Leaves toned.

Descripción:
New York: The Viking Press, 1939. First printing. Very good plus in a very good jacket.. First edition of the Pulitzer and National Book Award-winning novel that made Steinbeck a household name. GRAPES OF WRATH has been generations of students' introduction to the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. Steinbeck's extensive use of symbolism and Biblical motifs also makes it an excellent exercise in literary criticism for both high schoolers and hardcore academics, all pulled together with exceptionally lyrical prose. GRAPES OF WRATH was an immediate hit, and stayed atop bestseller lists for the majority of 1939. But it was not always beloved: the novel was a lighting rod for Steinbeck, both professionally and personally. His portrayal of the difficult lives of migrant workers and the corruption of the agriculture business earned him "constant vilification" from powerful farmers' groups, and the book was banned (and even occasionally burned) in a variety of communities (Demott). In his diaries,… Leer más

Descripción:
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1971. First edition. Near fine in a near fine jacket.. First printing of the darkly alluring reinvention of BEOWULF from the perspective of the monster. An influential combination of postmodern parable and classic retelling, a companion to the rich reinventions of Angela Carter and, in the 21st century, Madeline Miller in CIRCE. GRENDEL is maze of existential slipperiness so beautifully crafted that the reader can't help but sink into its worldview, and in so doing upend all the comfortable assumptions of morality and consciousness that keep philosophical chaos at bay. Postmodern Frankenstein. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original purple cloth stamped in gilt. In original unclipped ($5.95) orange pictorial dust jacket with drawing by Emil Antonucci. Purple topstain, fore-edge machine deckle. Illustrated by Antonucci with in-text line drawings. [10], 174, [4] pages. Sliver of faint sunning to edges of boards. Jacket with very mild fading to spine, as common. Overall sharp and clean.

Descripción:
New York: Random House, 1945. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.. Inscribed first edition, first printing of Tennessee Williams' semi-autobiographical memory play, his first stage success. GLASS MENAGERIE was a hit on Broadway, "hailed with joy from end to end" and praised as being composed of "make-believe so real it tears your heart out" (jacket). Its success rocketed Williams into the ranks of Arthur Miller and Eugene O'Neil. It has received several film adaptations, the first of which starred Gertrude Lawrence and Kirk Douglas. Based on an earlier short story "Portrait of a Girl in Glass," Tennessee Williams's GLASS MENAGERIE painfully echoes the events of his young adulthood. The play almost doesn't need the "semi-" qualifier ahead of "autobiographical," from Tom's monotonous job at the shoe factory (Williams began writing in earnest while working at the International Shoe Company factory) to his absent father (Williams' own father was a traveling salesman) and even to the lead… Leer más

Descripción:
New York: Random House, 1960. Near fine in very good jacket.. First edition, first state of this spellbinding read-aloud masterpiece. Seuss's knockout success with limited-vocabulary stories for beginning readers, especially CAT IN THE HAT, led his publisher Bennett Cerf to offer a wager: 50 dollars that Seuss couldn't create a children's book using only 50 words. Composing GREEN EGGS AND HAM was a trial that went far beyond Cerf's fifty-dollar bet. According to biographer Brian Jay Jones, Seuss "would rise to meet Cerf's challenge - and it was probably not entirely a coincidence that the central plot point of the resulting book was all about convincing someone to do something he didn't really want to do." The outcome was the best-selling Dr. Seuss book of all time. This copy comes directly from the stock of Aleph-Bet Books, the firm of Seuss bibliographers Helen Younger and Marc Younger. 9'' x 6.25''. Descripción:
Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1934. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.. First edition of this tender story of the life of an old schoolmaster, adapted into an Oscar-winning film in 1939 and again in 1969. A quintessentially British story told as the reminiscences of a schoolmaster beloved by generations of boys, GOOD-BYE, MR. CHIPS is a heartwarming classic. It received rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic: it was selected as the LONDON EVENING STANDARD's Book of the month, and the NASHVILLE BANNER noted that "[n]o dearer book has appeared in many years" (24). The numerous media adaptations of GOOD-BYE, MR. CHIPS are further testaments to its quality. This true first edition, published several months before the British edition, is a lovely addition to any bookshelf. 7.5'' x 5''. Original yellow cloth boards with blue lettering to front and spine. Descripción:
(Seattle): Fantagraphics Books, 1997. Fine in fine jacket.. Deluxe signed limited first edition of this acclaimed graphic novel, a moving portrait of late adolescence. Enid ("a restless outcast") and Rebecca ("her uneasy counterpart") drift lugubriously through the summer after high school graduation, pushing social and sexual boundaries, and brushing against darker realities in the process. In navigating the real world, the two cynics grapple with the powers and vulnerabilities that come with sexual maturity and adulthood. The comic captures the roiling mindset of two women in the midst of a momentous transition. A cult classic, signed by Clowes. 10.5'' x 6.25''. Original full blue cloth, front board and spine lettered in yellow. Original unclipped color pictorial dust jacket. Blue illustrated endpapers. Illustrated throughout, with a light green wash. 80 pages. Color illustrated bookplate numbered and signed by Clowes tipped onto front free endpaper, as issued. Just a little light rubbing to jacket.

Descripción:
New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925. First edition. Very good in very good jacket.. Inscribed first issue of the famous bestseller of the Jazz Age, chronicling the high life of a Hollywood flapper's trip to Europe. One of the great comic novels of the early 20th century, this work follows in the tradition of humorists like Mark Twain with the conceit of the American innocent abroad. Wildly popular, all copies of the first edition sold out in a single day; it serves as a useful contrast to the melancholy symbolism of THE GREAT GATSBY published the same year. Its tongue-in-cheek satire is nevertheless a perceptive commentary on the roles power and money can play in expanding or limiting women's freedoms, a theme which made Edith Wharton a vocal admirer. The 1949 musical introduced the song "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend, " memorably performed by Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 film. A rollicking adventure of the Roaring Twenties, scarce in the first issue and dust jacket, especially signed. 7.5'' x… Leer más

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1983. First edition. Fine in near fine jacket.. Inscribed first printing of Fossey's landmark scientific memoir. The primatologist's famous account of her research and conservation work with the mountain gorillas of Rwanda, published just two years before her murder. Fossey, initially trained as a biologist, ultimately earned a degree in occupational therapy and made ingenious use of her prior work with (human) clients to gain a measure of trust from suspicious gorilla bands. Her opposition to poaching and destructive wildlife tourism was a major factor in saving mountain gorillas from extinction. A remarkable copy of a remarkable book. 9'' x 6''. Descripción:
London: Chatto & Windus, 1942. Near fine in very good plus jacket.. First UK edition of Faulkner's novel in seven interconnected parts. Though early editions include the subtitle "And Other Stories" and much of its material had been previously published as individual short stories, Faulkner conceived of the book as a unified whole, proposing it to his Random House editor as "a more or less continuous narrative, somewhat after THE UNVANQUISHED" (Blotner). The UK edition followed a few months after the US edition and was printed to the "authorized economy standard" imposed on publishers by war shortages; copies in this condition are correspondingly uncommon. 8'' x 5.25''. Original green cloth. In original price-clipped peach printed dust jacket. 268, [2] pages. Boards lightly bumped. Jacket with slight soil and tiny chipping to top joints.
