First printing of this beloved tale of pirates and treasure maps, the touchstone for the modern concept of the peg-legged pirate with unexpected depth of character. With numerous film, TV, and theater adaptations that cast everyone from Orson Welles to Tim Curry and the Muppets as Long John Silver and company, the cultural reach of TREASURE ISLAND is extremely broad. Robert Louis Stevenson penned what would become his breakout success while recovering from one of his many illnesses, and it originally appeared serially in YOUNG FOLKS magazine. William Francis Prideaux observes that TREASURE ISLAND was "a comparative failure" in its serial form, and only found success when it was published as a complete work (27). London: Bruce and Wyld, 1846. Very good plus.. Rare first complete English translation of the classic swashbuckling adventure - the most acclaimed and influential of the early translations. First published in Paris in 1844, THE THREE MUSKETEERS appeared in England and America soon thereafter in a variety of shortened and serialized adaptations: first in two US translations, then serialized and abridged in the UK by Vickers. Barrow's version here, published as part of the Library of Foreign Romance series, is traditionally labeled the earliest complete English translation because Vickers omits "the account of the dinner at Maitre Coquenard's" plus "much of the original French version is compressed"; further, "an entirely new chapter which Dumas had not written is gratuitously interpolated before the final one" (Munro, 80-1). Philadelphia: Henry Altemus, 1904. Very good.. Early American pirated edition of the English classic, part of Henry Altemus's Wee Books for Wee Folks series. At the turn of the 20th century, a number of American publishers found success in reprinting English books without authorization (or payment) to the original publishers if those publishers did not take steps to secure their copyright in the United States. Altemus was one such publisher, and the famous TALE OF PETER RABBIT one such book. According to the information provided on the Henry Altemus Company collecting website (henryaltemus.com), this version is the second issue of the first American edition. (That site calls it the second edition, but notes the interior is the same as the first edition; it just has a new binding. Hence technically it is second issue, not edition, the latter of which implies a new setting of type.) Tarzan is one of the most recognizable pop cultural icons of the 20th century. Beginning with the novels, but quickly translating to film and beyond, Tarzan soon had his own merchandise, piracies, and international adaptations (including Bollywood films and Japanese manga). First printing of Hammett's final novel, an unusually nice copy of a book difficult to find in collectible condition. Hammett first began THE THIN MAN in 1930, writing in his comfortable wheelhouse of a San Francisco hard-boiled detective navigating a dark plot, but soon set the book aside. When he returned to it, Hammett moved the setting to New York and made his hero a famous but retired sleuth who is pulled reluctantly into intrigue. The added comedy and style in this revision translated surprisingly well on screen, with the 1934 film adaptation garnering four Oscar nominations and, today, legendary status.
