A rare account of Texas drawn from the letters of this adventurous doctor who sought out the wilderness and gave us a remarkable picture of the southwest during a crucial, complex and little understood time in the state's history.

His account supplements the diary of his friend and fellow diarist, Frederick Law Olmsted.
