Charming pocket almanac from Mariano José de Zúñiga y Ontiveros (1749-1825), Colonial Mexican philomath and surveyor.  Ontiveros published a series of these almanacs as well as other works on weather prediction, apparitions and manifestations of the Virgin Mary, and others.  This iteration, as stated in the preface, is published in the 2nd year of the new Spanish Constitution during the Trienio Liberal, year 14 of the reign of Ferdinand VII, year 290 of the Miraculous Apparition of Our Lady de Guadalupe, and other important dates, generally following Roman Martyrology.  Lists phases of the moon with illustrations, month by month, astronomical signs, weather patterns, feast and holidays, etc.  A fascinating and scarce object from the tail end of Colonial… Leer más

[San Francisco]: The California Historical Society, 1973. Poster, 21x16" printed in black on light brown paper. Signed in the lower right by Leah Garchik (perhaps a printed signature), who likely designed the poster. Few light wrinkles from rolling. Near fine. Poster for a cinemagraphic memorial to Japanese-American relocation during WWII which was created by students and faculty at the University of Delaware.  The program was sponsored in California by the Historical Society and likely put on at various schools and institutions.  We find mention of one showing cosponsored with the Cal State, Northridge History Club in 1973.  The show was described by The Van Nuys News as: "a three-projector slide show of pictures chosen from the National Archives' War Relocation Authority Collection, followed by two propaganda films made by the War Relocation Authority to convince Americans that the internment of Japanese-Americans was necessary to national security." Five of six issues of this important, regional literary magazine published by the husband and wife team of Wailes and Eunice Gray (although credited as Albert in the publication) of Georgetown, TX. The Calithump was published monthly from March to September of 1934, with no issue appearing in August. A blurb from the Marshall [TX] News Messenger, April 8th, 1934, described the publication as "a liberal literary journal... printed in an attic on ten dollars worth of type, but is a very neat piece of work with pleasing typography." Near fine with lightly bumped upper corner. No jacket. Though not marked in any way, this copy comes from the personal library of the author.

First British edition of this novel from L'engle, and though not marked as such in any way, comes from the author's personal library. Very good with some toning to spine and foredge of front board. Jacket shows a bit of rubbing at spine ends and corners and is otherwise nicely preserved. Oddly, a circular portion of the author photo on the rear flap has been neatly trimmed out, presumably, by L'engle herself. Perhaps she wasn't particularly happy with the photo? Otherwise a nice copy of a scarce book from the author's own library.

London: Secker and Warburg, 1952. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/Fair. Scarce first british edition of this novel from L'engle. Good book with foxing to edges of boards and spine, as well as endpapers and pages near the end and beginning. Scarce jacket is in Fair condition, missing the top 1.5" of inner front flap, heavy wear and chipping to spine ends and corners.

[Washington, D.C.]: The Camp Fire Girls, 1916. Broadside, 39x21cm, thin and brittle wood grain paper, printed in black and red. Signed by Gulick and secretary, Elsie M. Evans. Moisture staining to bottom half, most prominent on verso, chipping to edges,3" tear from top edge, else good. Very scarce certificate from the early years of the youth organization founded by Luther H. Gulick (1865-1918), which began as an all-girls group meant to mirror the Boy Scouts of America, originally called The Camp Fire Girls.   Gulick was also a founding member of the phys. ed. dept. at Springfield College, where he challenged a young James Naismith to invent a youth game suitable for indoors play during the offseason.  He later helped spread and popularize Naismith's innovative game, basketball.  Gulick, being in the Naismith Hall of Fame, is an important signature and also one that is incredibly elusive.  .

Spine partially split from bottom up about 7cm, moisture stain to edge of front endpaper else clean and very good. Nice copy of this account of travels by rail, horse, and foot through Colorado.  Prints two lectures given by the rev. J. R Fisher for the Ladies' Aid Society and published at their request.  Very detailed descriptions of towns and scenery.
