England?: N/A, 1800. Early manuscript copy - apparently English in origin - of a French novel of diabolic seduction that has inspired everyone from Jacques Lacan to Jonny Depp. Small quarto (16.5x20.5cm) bound in (likely) English full sheep, rubbed with some loss close to outer hinges but boards remain well attached. No decoration apart from a gilt roll to the edge of the boards. The paper stock has a Britannia watermark and horizontal chainlines; light green edges to the text block. The manuscript text appears to be copied from the anonymous Neapolitan edition of 1772, without Cazotte's name attached to the text, beginning with the editor's foreword, 'Avis de L'Editeur' [pp] 5 followed by 'Le Diable amoureux nouvelle espagnole, pp 1-90, including the characteristic song and musical notation which appear in this manuscript at pages 49-52. The text of the novel is written in an easily legible cursive hand, set out within a pencilled box and neatly paginated. The combination of an English sheep binding…

Budapest: Robert, Susan and John Balazs, 1998. 220 x 143 mm. Near Fine. pp 102 Near fine in pictorial wrappers, small indentations to upper cover. Bilingual Hungarian/English. An attractive volume celebrating the life and work of Hungarian artist Marta Edinger-Balazs, who was best known as the cartoonist EDMA, but as this book shows, was also a sculptor and artist of great sensitivity and humour. Fully illustrated in colour. We have recently acquired the library of Harry Horlock Stringer who was a leading British potter at the old Fulham Pottery in the 1950's where he concentrated on earthenware. Later he moved to Taggs Yard in Barnes, south west London, where he built and ran his own school, welcoming pupils and making friends such as Ginger Rogers from across the world at a time when studio pottery was enjoying newfound popularity. Stringer experimented with his own glazes and firing techniques, and wrote a book on Raku, becoming a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association, editing the association's…

Descripción:
Paris: Unpublished, 1690. 500 engravings from the late 17th century made by Louis XIV's chief engraver which include celebrated depictions of the fountains of 'le labryrinthe de Versailles', costume at the court of the Sun King and the Fauxbourgs of Paris. Three large quarto volumes (21x26cm) bound in worn calf; marbled endpapers with the bookplate of 'Abercairny' (Scottish ancestral seat of the Stirling Home Drummond Moray family) to each front pastedown, masking an earlier family bookplate that is present in Vol III. The engravings are mostly from the second half of the 17th century, sometimes removed from books, sometimes issued separately and collected together and mounted to the blank pages of these books more than a century later. Their French compiler has provided a manuscript title page dated to 1812 in Paris to each of the three volumes which sets out the scope of the collection. The third is the most miscellaneous in nature although a terminal manuscript list of the plates provides a guide.…
