Unknown: M. L. Jackson, 1912. Original postcard from the "Hallowe'en Don'ts" series produced by M. L. Jackson. As the the postcard says: "Don't be afraid for on Hallowe'en if you take a lighted candle and a mirror clean at the stroke of twelve, look in and there's seen the face of your lover that I ween." The postcard is embossed and has the publisher's lion's head logo. Postmarked on Hallowe'en, October 31, 1912 in Iowa; the name of the city begins with "H" but the remainder is obscured. Cambridge, England: Unpublished, 1951. Original handwritten letter from E. M. W. Tillyard to College of William and Mary English Professor Fraser Neiman in response to Neiman's invitation for Tillyard to lecture at W&M.  It is a gracious and chatty letter in which Tillyard lays out his plans for a visit to the U.S. for lectures at Johns Hopkins and expresses his hope that his health will allow him to include W&M on his visit.  As for his health, he provides more than the expected detail about his problem with his appendix.  The letter is on the letterhead of The Master's Lodge, Jesus College, Cambridge (Tillyard was the Master) and is in the original mailing envelope.  Both letter and envelope are in very good condition.. The 1957 telephone directory for all offices and more than 1500 employees of the Hanford Works, one of the earliest nuclear research facilities in the United States. Front cover states "For official use only". Quotation from the Atomic Energy Commission Manual on back cover: "Classified defense information shall not be discussed in telephone conversations". New York: Harper's Weekly, 1865. 16 pages. Large folio (16 inches by 11 1/4 inches). Harper's Weekly was the most important American pictorial newspaper in the 19th century. Because the original wood engravings in virtually every issue are highly collectible, complete issues are becoming more difficult to obtain. The issue offered here focuses on Lincoln's inauguration following his 1864 reelection. It includes the complete text of his famous "with malice toward none" speech and an editorial lauding the speech. The front page includes a full-page wood engraving after a photograph by Alexander Gardner, with the caption "President Lincoln Taking the Oath at His Second Inauguration, March 4, 1865." The centerfold is a double-page wood engraving (also after a Gardner photo) entitled "President Lincoln's Reinauguration at the Capitol." Harper's Weekly was the most important American pictorial newspaper in the 19th century. Because the original wood engravings in virtually every issue are highly collectible, complete issues are becoming more difficult to obtain. The issue offered here focuses on the passage in Congress of the Thirteenth Amendment to the U. S. Constitution. The amendment outlawed all slavery in the United States. On the front cover is a large wood engraving showing the celebration of members of Congress and citizens in the gallery; the caption reads, "Scene in the House on the Passage of the Proposition to Amend the Constitution, January 31, 1865. The issue here focuses on Lincoln's New York City funeral procession and the capture and killing of John Wilkes Booth. The front page features a wood engraving of the newly sworn-in President Andrew Johnson. It is based on a photograph by Alexander Gardner. The centerfold is a double-page wood engraving captioned, "President Lincoln's Funeral--Procession in New York City." It is based on a photograph by Matthew Brady.
