Original cloth gilt with bevelled edges and blind-stamped line decoration. Ex-library copy with the usual stamps etc and marks to cover cloth & endpapers where labels have been removed. A few marginal marks in pencil & some pages corner-creased; overall condition near very good. Scarce study of "flatulent distention of the stomach and bowels" and its surgical treatment.

North Shields; Simpson & Mustart, 1873., 1873. Softcover. Read at the sixteenth annual meeting, held on Thursday 217th February, 1873, with the balance sheets of receipts and expenditure, the Laws of the Institution and an Alphabetical List of Life Members and Subscribers, from January 1st to December 31st, 1872". Original stitched pictorial blue paper wraps with a few very minor fingermarks and creases - this is a remarkable survival and at first glance you would be forgiven for thinking it a modern reprint. Very clean internally with no annotation or inscriptions. The Sailor's Home was one of numerous charitable institutions, presented to the town in 1856 by the Duke of Northumberland who was also the Patron. Illustrated - 12 plates showing costed farm plans ( of which 10 are double-page spreads) plus 12 companion double-page Isometrical Views showing the farms in a landscape setting. Spine sunned with skilfully repaired split and with 2 cm cloth insert at head above original cloth. Endpapers renewed otherwise all original. Sporadic foxing largely to page edges and endpapers. Handwritten name & date to half-title. In very good condition overall. The first and only edition of this valuable reference work which covers all aspects of estate management including soil improvement, crop rotation, farm buildings, the law of entail and many other fascinating subjects too diverse to mention. A very scarce copy - as far as we know it's the only one currently on sale.

Autobiography of the inventor of the collapsible Berthon Boat (as used to rescue survivors of the Titanic in 1912) who was also the Rector at Romsey, Hants.
