Leo Simpson's Sailor Man is an absurdist fantasy centred on the character Jack and his pursuit of his nemesis Elmo Apse. Drawing on the imagery of the Italian theatrical form of commedia dell'arte, Simpson's comic novel takes on the trappings of modernity and its influences on small town life. Set partly in Belleville, Ontario, the the majority of the novel takes place in Ottawa, Ontario.

Anne Marriott (1913-1997) was a Canadian modernist poet. She was best known for her long poem The Wind Our Enemy, which was published in 1939. This work was based on her experiences living in Saskatchewan during the Great Depression, under drought conditions. This poem inspired an entire genre that came to be known as "Canadian documentary poetry." She would go on to win the Governor-General's Award for Poetry in 1942 for her chap-book Calling Adventures!
Sandstone and other poems was her best known collection, and was published in 1945. It includes a number of poems written in the preceding five years, including The Wind Our Enemy.
This volume is in Near Fine condition with a dust jacket in very good condition. There is staining to the dust jacket and some slight wear to the top of the spine of the dust jacket. The book is inscribed by Anne Marriott, "To teh McCulloughs" and dated August, 1945 in Ottawa.

A beautiful little edition of Thomas Carlyle's Sartor Resartus, a satirical work presented as a philosophical discourse on the meaning and significance of clothes.
The publisher, the Henry Altemus Company, produced various series of reprints of classic works, each run of which was distinguished by a different beautiful cover. This particular cover is from the third numbering of the Petit Trianon series published from 1899 to 1910.
The book shows some wear to the edges of the boards and particularly to the top and bottom of the spine. The poor condition arises from four pages, including the title page, an illustration, and the table of contents having separated from the binding. Despite these defects, the volume still presents a beautiful appearance, and would be a welcome edition to bring character to one's collection.

A beautiful Folio Society edition of the classic novel The Scarlet Pimpernel. The slipcase is present and is in Near Fine condition, with some staining and a small dent to the bottom edge. This is the third printing of the 1997 edition, with illustrations by Lucy Weller and an introduction by Hilary Mantel.

Born to missionaries in China in 1872 Abbie Lyon Sharman, who published under the pen name Lyon Sharman, was an author of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, short stories, and plays. Having moved back to the United States at a young age, she returned to China in 1922 which inspired the publication of The Sea Wall, which she illustrated herself inspired by Chinese art.
This copy of The Sea Wall is inscribed by the author, reading: "For Jack Davidson and Sasha on entering this new life in the country of my first love. Lyon Sharman August 26, 1925."
This copy is in good condition with some cracking and wear to the spine. It has paper covered boards, which are worn in places, including bumped and torn corners on the boards.

J. Krishnamurti was an independent scholar and philosopher who focussed on the unity of humanity in the face of the ideological division. He himself pledged no allegiance to a particular ideology, rather focussing his spirituality on the importance of self-awareness and the interconnectivity of humanity with each other and with nature.
The Second Penguin Krishnamurti Reader includes two of his most popular works, "The Urgency of Chance" and "The Only Revolution." This volume was edited by Mary Lutyens, an English author best know for her biographical studies of Krishnmurti.

A sweet tale about a Scottish terrier named Buttons trying to fit in with the bigger dogs. Written by Alf Evers, who was known for his sweet, fable-like stores for children, and illustrated beautifully by Marguerite Kirmse, who was known for her drawings of dogs.
This volume is unfortunately in poor condition, though this is largely based on the state of the paper wrappers. The staple bound wrappers have separated from the book, but the pages inside remain together and in tact. There are crayon marks on the front cover, and tears to the wrappers that have been fixed on the inside with masking tape. There is a tear to the top of the front wrapper, and the first page.
Other than a small crayon mark on the final page, and the masking tape on the inside of the front and back wrappers, the inside of the book is in excellent condition, and is filled with beautiful illustrations and a sweet story that may still be enjoyed.

Published by Sherwin Cody, these small volumes from the Nutshell Library bring together the key works of some of literature's most notable authors. These collections served as supplements to The Sherwin Cody 100% Self-Correcting Course in English. The six volumes here include An Evening with Burns, An Evening with Tennyson, An Evening with Lincoln, An Evening with Scott, An Evening with Shakspere (note the use of the variant spelling), and An Evening with Dickens. They range in condition from Poor to Fair, resulting entirely from the damage to the covers. The texts inside remain clear and entirely readable. The cover for the Evening of Dickens has come off entirely, but front and back covers are still attached and the pages themselves remain bound together securely. The front cover of An Evening with Shakspere has torn off, but is still present. The cover of An Evening with Lincoln has separated from the quires at the spine, but is still attached. Pansy is the pen name for American author Isabella Macdonald Alden, who was born in 1841. She wrote her first book in 1865 at the age of 24, and went on to be a prolific author of novels intended to communicate wholesome Christian messages to young people.
Pansy's books were incredibly popular, and by 1900 100,000 Pansy books were being sold a year. Rev. Francis E. Clark in 1895 wrote of the popularity of the series that, "Probably no writer of stories for young people has been so popular or had so wide an audience as Mrs G.R. Alden, whose pen-name, 'Pansy,' is known wherever English books are read."
This particular Pansy book, A Sevenfold Trouble, tells the story of an unhappy family to which harmony is brought when its members look to Christ for guidance.

Written by respected children's author Robina Beckles Willson with charming illustrations by Bernadette Waters, The Shell on Your Back is a work of non-fiction written for children that discusses the various types of homes occupied by people and different creatures. The prose inside is straightforward and yet not over-simplified, so young readers will not feel condescended to, but appropriately challenged. An endearing and informative tale that provides young readers the opportunity to read and learn for themselves.
This volume is in very good condition. There is some age-related staining and wear to the dust jacket. Internally the books is in excellent condition, with all pages being present, the binding tight, and the text and illustrations clear and bright.

Christine Lighthall Henderson belonged to a prominent Quebec family. She was a cousin of the noted Canadian philosopher and writer W.D. Lighthall. After her husband passed away, she began to travel extensively, which inspired her to start writing. Ship's Wake and Road's Lure was her first signification collection of poetry and, as the name suggests, was inspired largely by her travels.
This copy is in Very Good condition. There is some minor wear to the top edges of the spine, and the gilt on the cover is faded.

Written by architect, town planner, and independent historian Ernest Clarke, this book provides an account of the events leading up to the siege of Fort Cumberland in 1776. The author argues that Nova Scotia was loyal to Britain, while taking into account the attitudes of the various groups affected by the conflict.
This volume is in As New condition with a dust jacket also in As New condition. It appears to be inscribed on the front fly leaf, possibly by the author (written as "Ernie").

A 1932 reprint of the original 1854 autobiography of William Stuart, a notorious criminal and counterfeiter from Connecticut, written in order to guide others away from the criminal path he had taken. A fascinating early true crime account by the perpetrator himself. This volume is in Good condition, and does not come with a dust jacket. The binding is tight and the text entirely legible. There is wear to the red cloth on the top and bottom of the spine as well as on the corners and on spot on the front edge of the cover. The gilt lettering on the spine is quite faded. There is a tipped-in description on the front paste-down and a tipped-in title page on the front endpaper. There is also the signature of a previous owner on the front flyleaf.

Begun in 1941 and including twenty-one illustrated volumes, the Smithsonian Institution War Background Studies series was intended to increase general knowledge about those regions affected by the Second World War, particularly those located in the Pacific. These volumes proved to be very popular with the public, leading to an increase in the print run in 1943. In addition, the army and navy began ordering copies to increase the knowledge of their service members.
Volume 20, on China, was written by A.G. Wenley and John A. Pope, both notable Sinologists who worked at the Smithsonian's Freer Gallery. Songs of the Sierras was the most notable work of American journalist and poet Joaquin Miller (1837-1913). The work was incredibly popular in England for its romantic portrayal of the Old West, though was less popular for the same reason in the US.
This copy is in Good condition. There is wear to the brown cloth covering the boards, and significant bumping to the edges of the boards. The gilt on the spine is quite faded. This copy has dark grey/green endpapers which have notes in pencil from previous authors, and exhibit some wear and small tears. There is foxing to the pages, and one of the initial pages has remnants of a pencil note that has been erased. Page 13 has a stain of some kind, but it does not make any of the text illegible, and otherwise the pages are clear and legible save for some age-related discolouration. The back hinge is also cracked

Joaquin Miller was an American journalist and poet. He is best known for his collection of poems about the old west called Songs of the Sierras, which provided a romantic portrayal of the American west and was particularly popular in England.
This copy is in Good condition. The spine is rather faded and there is some bumping and wear to the boards. There is an embossed stamp from Buckley's English & American bookstore on the title page. There is also a small tear on the title page. The back pastedown also has a sticker from Buckley's English & American Book Stationary & Music Store. There is some foxing to the pages, but overall the text is entirely legible despite some age-related discolouration to the pages.

A collection of poems by J.E. Caldwell concerned with life in rural Ontario and the surrounding nature. Many of the poems focus on life in the Ottawa Valley. There are also poems in commemoration of significant events, such as Queen Victoria's Jubilee. An interesting firsthand account of life in rural Ontario in the late nineteenth century.
This volume is in good condition. there is some wear to the cloth covering the boards, particularly on the spine. There is bumping to the corners as well. There is the signature of a previous owner on the front flyleaf. The pages show some age-related discolouration, but the text is all clear and legible and the binding appears tight.

This is a large study of German medieval music, focussing on the period of the minnesingers, who were lyric poets of the 12th-14th centuries and performed songs of courtly love. It includes an anthology of minnesongs, including music, and German and English lyrics, illustrations from original manuscripts and a record with recordings of some of the key songs from the period performed with accompaniment on period instruments.
This copy and its dust jacket are both in Near Fine condition and the record is present and also appears to be in excellent, playable condition.
