A remarkably nice copy of a book that isn't often found thus. Fairly uncommon even in institutional holdings, OCLC identifies a 19 copies (OCLC 5947686). Clark remarks: "Mitchell claimed that he lived in the United States (mostly in Richmond, Virginia) for a period of ten years (1848-58). This book, which is based on his observations while a resident of the United States, is generally favorable to the South and to slavery. [2], 323, [1] pp. Contemporary calf, worn, leather dry and abraded; leather of spine and joints chipped with loss; one corner of front cover worn away; ex-library with all the usual markings, bookplate, and some pencil ones; textblock is largely free of toning or foxing. Whether Cardinal Richelieu wrote this "Political testament" or whether it was Paul Hay, marquis du Chatelet (as some have suggested), the work remains an important work on state craft and advice to a ruler on government. Text in French.

A fairly sharp, crisp copy with just a bit of smudging on the front cover and a bit of sunning to the top of the rear cover; contemporary bookseller's ticket inside the front cover; contents are clean. Nevins describes this as "[t]he abridged letters (1862-1865) of Dr. Edward W. Cade, whose service as a brigade surgeon was in teh Trans-Mississippi department" CWB I, 51. Dornbusch II, 2633.

Printed in black Palatino on handmade ivory-colored Shadwell paper sewn into Fabriano paper covers with jacket and acronym of the title:author stamped in blind on the front; "illustrated by an anonymous diagram of the mechnics fo the piano, key and wire, etc." Hamady notes in the bibliography, "This paper was couched on the 'magic felt' which was gratis from a papermill here in Wisconsin. It was loaded with pigment from its last job, so each pressing produced a different color in the sheet, beginning with a hot pink & lighter to an orange & on to Ivory & finally off-white with light tangerine deckles!" Two Decades of Hamady & the Perishable Press, 24. A beautiful fine printing of Wakoski's haunting poem.
