1941. A group of 12 file photographs of Mobile, including a couple of Mardi Gras in Mobile. An interesting group of images. Conditions vary, but generally Good. Stamped and manuscript dates range from 1926 to 1954, though most are in the early 1940s. Sizes range, but generally 8 x10s.

Pennsylvania Society of the National Colonial Dames of America, 1942. Hard Cover. Very Good+ binding. Oblong octavo. [30] pp. Blue cloth with title and vignette stamped in gold on the front cover; previous owner bookplate on the front free endpaper as well as a tasteful institutional bookplate on the front pastedown; clean throughout; a charming abecedary.

Richmond: Richmond Press, 1927. Very Good binding. Octavo. 32 pp. Reprint. Stapled into stiff, printed wrappers. Light wear and some pencil bracketing to the epigraph on the cover; contents clean. Christian assures the reader that his address "will be in no spirit of carping criticism, with no desire to do injustice to [Lincoln], and will be as free from sectional prejudice and passion as one who has suffered as I have, by the conduct of Mr. Lincoln and his followers, can make it" (p. 1). It is nevertheless, a searing partisan assessment of who Christian calls a "Godless tyrant." Haynes 3413.

A bit of wear with light chipping and some staining to the covers; notable stain to the fore-edge margin of the first leaf; contents are generally toned. An early edition of a frequently reprinted address. Remnants of binding on the spine; title page is loosening; generally toned; ink number in the bottom margin of p. iii. Autobiography of a Quaker convert. An early edition was printed at Philadelphia by B. & J. Johnson in 1800. Publisher's advertisement on the final page. Shaw & Shoemaker 4562.

Richmond: Samuel Pleasants, 1811. Half Leather. Good binding. Octavo. 136 pp. Backed in calf with corners and paper over boards; binding significantly rubbed. Neat and contemporary manuscript title on the front free endpaper; text is heavily foxed throughout. An interesting collection of early Virginia laws including laws relating to enslaved persons; various individuals allowed to build roads and bridges, some with tolls; matters relating to soldiers; and more.

1805. Original Wrappers. Very Good binding. 12mo. 19, [1 (blank)] pp. First edition. As issued, stitched in plain wrapper; a few leaves unopened. Light wear to the covers including some silverfishing to the top inner margin of the rear wrapper and diminishing through the next several leaves; light soiling, but largely a remarkably copy. Deaccessioned as a library duplicate, the only indication being a mid-20th century gift stamp deep in the inner margin of p. 3; contents clean. An address criticizing incumbent Pennsylvania governor Thomas McKean and recommending Simon Snyder as governor in the 1805 election. While Snyder lost to McKean in a contentious 1805 contest, he would ultimately win in 1808 and serve three terms. The language early in the address is salient: "Principles and not men, were the foundations, on which American independence was established .... Ink drop stain to the outer margin of the fore-edge, not affecting any text, otherwise contents are clean. A brief sketch of the Virginia Senator. Haynes 11092.

As issued, in navy cloth with title in gold on the front cover and the spine. Light shelfwear to the binding including what appears to be a very little paint on the bottom edge of the front board; offsetting to the endpapers, otherwise, it is largely clean. Keith's addresses have quite a range, but a couple relate to the American Civil War, including a sketch of General Eppa Hunton. Haynes 9923.

Bennington, VT: William Haswell, 1825. Disbound. Good binding. 12mo. 23, [1 (blank)] pp. Removed from binding; light foxing throughout; contemporary ink pagination indicating its placement in the volume from which it was removed. Early religious tract. Sabin and McCorison tentatively posit printing dates of 1813 and 1812 respectively, while Gilman puts it at 1825. William's father, Anthony Haswell was a Boston, then Worcester printer during the Revolution and moved his family to Bennington in 1781 becoming the second printer in Vermont. A nice imprint from a line of notable Bennington printers. Sabin 99138; Vermont Imprints 1345; Gilman, "Bibliography of Vermont," p. 14.

Woodward, AL: Woodward Iron Company, 1940. Hard Cover. Very Good+ binding. Quarto. 162, [7 (index)] pp., illus. First edition. In publisher's embossed leatherette over boards. Light rubbing to the covers, but generally a very nice and solid copy. This work offers a brief history of the manufacture of pig iron in Alabama, which Berg calls the "most important industry in the State [and] a vital factor in the prosperity and welfare of its people" p. 7. But the really value is this histories and records of several dozen blast furnaces built and operated in Alabama, illustrated by photographs throughout. Sufficiently important that the University of Alabama Press issued a reprint of this in its "Library of Alabama Classics" series. Quite scarce in commerce; even the reprint is fairly uncommon. [Montgomery]: Department of Agriculture and Industries, 1906. Soft Cover. Very Good+ binding. Octavo. 199, [1] pp., illus. First edition. As issued, stapled and in printed wrappers. A remarkably bright copy with only light shelfwear and some minor staining to the cover; contents clean and binding is tight. A very uncommon promotional piece from the State of Alabama outlining the agricultural opportunities in that state. OCLC identifies just 20 institutions holding copies. OCLC 4609323.

Tuscaloosa, AL: University of Alabama Press, 1998. Hard Cover. Near Fine binding/Near Fine dust jacket. Octavo. xxi, [3], 731, [1] pp., illus. First edition. Signed and inscribed by Flynt on the half title. In publisher's cloth with dust jacket. A bit of rippling to the half title from binding, but a very sharp copy of this exhaustive and scholarly history.

Leather at both joints are splitting, but the boards are holding well; chipping to the leather at the tail of the spine; contents are generally foxed; last few leaves including the marbled endpaper show some silverfishing to the top corner (margin only); soiling to the rear endpapers. From a massive, multi-volume work, this single volume on the Post Office Department is complete in itself. Sabin notes of the whole work, "This valuable work was printed by order of the United States Government, and distributed through the Members of Congress. It contains reprints, not only of all the early occasional publications of the Congress that could be found, but many important papers from the Archives of the Government never before published" Sabin 1228. As issued, in linen over boards with vignette title in red on the front cover and spine and publisher's dust jacket. Binding is solid and clean with very occasional offsetting from acidic paper page-markers left at the top of the inner margin of several openings; a few pencil check marks in the margin; dust jacket is gently edgeworn with a bit of scuffing to the back panel.

Quite a nice copy, clean throughout but for a small Alabama bookseller's ticket on the front pastedown; dust jacket is trifle worn at the top of the front and rear panels, but really quite presentable; price intact on the front flap. While reprints abound, first editions of this book are uncommon.
