The core of this volume is the collection of Chian pithoi and pithos lids belonging to Angelos Vlastaris. The book also contains important ceramics from other collections, as well as a wealth of archive material. Its scope is not limited to the study of the pottery alone; it also aims to present a tangible picture of the great cultural and social flowering of Chios before the Massacre of 1822.
The ceramics were crafted in recent centuries but touch upon a medieval past. Their crude construction, their shape and their decoration are all features of Byzantine pithoi, attesting to an unbroken ceramic tradition. Their technical and morphological features indicate a standardised technological chaîne opératoire and a specific way of learning the craft. Exhibition catalogue; presents the famous doulamas, a rare garment worn in the Western Balkans during the Ottoman Era; it presents interesting variants from place to place.
The book analyzes the various versions of the terminology, the traces, the materials and the decoration, and ultimately suggests new ways of using it in fashion and theater, which has already been made in many performances by the National Theater of Greece, the Theater of Northern Greece, and the Thessalian Theater.
As for fashion, a first attempt has already been made when, on the occasion of the participation of I. Papantoniou at the ICOM Costume Committee 2017 meeting in London, an experimental exhibition based on the doulamas and the pirpiri (the female form of the doulamas) was proposed to some Greek designers; also, the Dries van Noten Inspirations, presented at MoMu in Antwerp (2015), were also based on the doulamas.
