Redding, Conn: C.E. Ives, 1922. First edition. Original printed boards with cloth back and paper spine label, 6-1/2 in. x 12 in. 1 score (258 [i.e. 112]) pages ; 31 cm. Light soiling to back cover, corners and spine label show slight wear, else fine. Ives selected these (actually 52 songs) from his collection 114 Songs, published earlier in 1922, as being of greater general interest. Both collections were privately engraved and printed for Ives by G. Schirmer, the 114 Songs in edition of 1500 copies; we haven't located a record of the number printed of 50 Songs, but it must have been far fewer.

Begins: "Morte dira...."Framed.

Braunschweig, 1875. A five-line letter to an unidentified correspondent, with a note on the verso in a second hand providing the dates of Abt's stay in Braunschweig. Light offsetting from a self-adhesive album page, otherwsie very good. German composer Abt (1819-1885) enjoyed considerable success in his day as a choral conductor but is best remembered for elegant songs such as "So viele Tausend Blumen" and Wenn die Schwalben heimwärts ziehn" Autograph letter signed.

3 pages 8vo. March 23, 1853, London, inquiring about the appointment of Lord Ward to the Management Committee of the Royal Academy of Music. Fine. English composer Bishop (1786-1855) enjoyed in his day a reputation as guardian of the best traditions of British song. Now he is remembered chiefly as the composer of Home, Sweet Home. Autograph letter signed.

Split one half-inch at the fold of the conjugate leaves, otherwise fine. German composer Hiller (1811-1885) studied under Hummel. A substantial letter in Hiller's difficult hand. Despite his conservative musical bent and outspoken antipathy to Wagner, he enjoyed the friendship of Chopin, Liszt, and Berlioz. It was as a conductor and a writer on music, however, that he won the most admirers. Autograph letter signed.

One page 8vo, n.d. , arranging a meeting: "Mon cher ami, . . .Je recois avec beaucoup de joie tes bonne nouvelles. Je serais chez toi 4 h[eures ]1/4, demain Samedi...." Tipped along one edge to a narrow strip of heavier paper. Two light spots of foxing, otherwise very good. French composer Halèvy (1799-1862) studied under Cherubini and taught Gounod, Bizet, and Saint-SaËns. His operas were admired by both Berlioz and Wagner. Autograph letter signed.

On a leaf extracted from an autograph album (4-3/8 x 6 inches). Very good, with three holes punched along the left edge of the page. American violinist Spalding (1888-1953) gave the U.S. premieres of the violin concertos of Dohanyi, Elgar, and Barber. His own works include two violin concertos, a string quartet, and a fictionalized biography of Tartini.

San Francisco Symphony Chamber Music Series program, January 9, 1994 (Previn played piano in the Brahms F minor quintet).Signed on p. 15 by Previn. Fine, with a ticket stub and a subsequent review clipped from the San Francisco Chronicle laid in. Previn (b. 1929) enjoys international acclaim as pianist, conductor, and composer. He studied in Paris under Marcel Dupré and San Francisco under Pierre Monteux, received Academy Awards for his film scores (Gigi, Porgy and Bess, My Fair Lady), has conducted and recorded with major orchestras from Los Angeles to Vienna, and composes songs, jazz, chamber music, and opera (A Streetcar Named Desire). Fine.Godunov (1950-1995) danced with the Bolshoi and, following his defection in 1979, with the American Ballet Theater. Subsequently he enjoyed a minor acting career playing villains and madmen in films like Die Hard and Waxwork II. Signed card.
