Scarborough Football Club, which enjoyed a period in the Football League between the late 1980s and late 1990s, was dissolved within a few years of the publication of this book, produced to coincide with the club's 125th Anniversary Season. A new club, Scarborough Athletic, which plays in the sixth tier of English football and retains the Seagull badge of Scarborough FC, continues the tradition. .

"The County Cricket Championship, the oldest cricket competition in the world, is generally accepted as starting in the 1873 season, but, as we shall see, that is a convenient date decided upon many years later. In 1744 Kent played England at the Artillery Ground, London, but cricket in those early years was far from being on an organized basis and it was not until 1836 that Sussex, the oldest of the county clubs, was formed." .
