Peace is Our Answer is a 1950 collection of twelve linocuts by Australian artist and committed peace activist Noel Counihan, inspired by the politics and social hardships he'd experienced during and since the Second World War. They are accompanied by poems by Jack Lindsay, and have prefatory poems by Paul Eluard, Pablo Neruda, and Louis Aragon. Condition: This copy is in very good condition for age. There is an old, small water stain to the covers at the top of the spine but this has not penetrated to the pages. Slight tanning to the covers but they are otherwise in good order. Slim paperback, stapled binding. 20 × 20.5cm, 23pp. This slim book accompanied an exhibition at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture in 2008. As well as the introductory essay, it carries 15 drawings from Peter de Francia. In Ashton's essay she places de Francia within a humanistic tradition of draftsmen as freedom fighters stretching from Goya to Guttuso, via Beckmann, Picasso and Grosz. There are shades, too, of a distinctly British tradition of caricature, of Hogarth and Rowlandson, in de Francia's pointed social satire. Condition: This copy is in very good condition, but with a little tanning to the cover's edges.

Rebound in plain binder's cloth. 15.5 × 10.5cm, xvi + 262pp. A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful is a 1757 treatise on aesthetics written by Edmund Burke. It was the first complete philosophical exposition for separating the beautiful and the sublime into their own respective rational categories. It attracted the attention of prominent thinkers such as Denis Diderot and Immanuel Kant. Condition: This copy is in good condition for age. The cloth is in good shape but faded to the spine. The contents remain in strong readable condition though with light spotted foxing throughout.

Alexander Kelly (1929-1996), pianist and professor at the Royal College of Music. He gave his debut under Sir Thomas Beecham, and as a teacher his pupils included Peter Jacobs, David Owen Norris, Iain Burnside, and Jonathan Plowright. He married cellist Margaret Moncrieff, who also wrote two novels for the Chalet School series under the name Helen McClelland. The renowned concert pianist and teacher Hans von Bulow gave a series of piano master classes in the summers of 1884-1887. Stated on title page as being sold at Ye Old Paris Booke Shoppe, Paris, and dated from bibliography to rear. Wilde's only novel, first published in 1890, is a brilliantly designed puzzle, intended to tease conventional minds with its exploration of the myriad interrelationships between art, life, and consequence. Condition: A good reading copy. The title page and first few pages of text are heavily foxed, lessening as you go through the book. Page edges and margins tanned and foxed. Corners a little bumped but the whole remaining in good, readable condition.

Hardback in dustwrapper. 19.5 × 12.5cm, 284pp. In the years after the Great War, a young couple move to an Elizabethan farmhouse, Pigeon Hoo, on the Kent / Sussex borders (believed to be Tenterden). They meet a cast of characters from builders to gardeners, and this novel relates their experiences in the country. As an interesting aside, Franklin Lushington was an artillery officer in the Great War and was poet Edward Thomas's commanding officer at Arras (he later wrote about this in The Gambardier under the pseudonym Mark Severn). Condition: The book itself is in strong readable condition, with some light foxing tot he title page and page edges. A previous seller has penned the price of 2/- to the rear endpaper. The dustwrapper is good, with several small closed tears to the edges and spine but is now within a protective sleeve and has not been price-clipped.
