Engraved by Thomas Higham (1796-1844) from an original study by the well-known William Henry Bartlett. Originally produced for the part-work series "Ports, Harbours, Watering Places and Coast Scenery of Great Britain" (London : 1836-1842). Steel line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 136 x 188mm (approx. 5-5/8" x 7-3/8"). In very good and clean state. A guaranteed genuine antique print.

The most notorious and most scrutinised of the books in the 1954 obscenity trial, with Heade at his very best on the front cover, with a tenderness sometimes lacking. Evidently based on James M. Cain's "The Postman Always Rings Twice", it is thought that the outline of the plot was supplied to Frances by Geoffrey Pardoe (Holland p.299). "Powerfully evokes the claustrophobic little café" (John Fraser). Original boards; top edge a touch dusty, but otherwise a very good copy indeed in the dust-jacket - the jacket also very good.

[xiv],(116)pp. Plates, some coloured. Portraits. Original cloth gilt; spine just a touch sunned; a few faint spots, but a very good copy in the original slip-case - somewhat worn and slightly split.

A delightful little squib - "Dr Searle, face to face as always with the sicknesses of twentieth-century society, has now confronted the terrible problem of addiction. In this book he concisely and graphically crystallizes the horror and degradation of those who are slaves to narcotics ... Take a trip with Searle. London : Michael Joseph, (1971). First edition. "A man called Chamberlain who did Prime Minister impressions spoke on the wireless; he said, 'As from eleven o'clock we are at war with Germany'. (I loved the WE) ...". Autobiography, truth, and humour from Milligan, who performed (rather than read) parts of the book at the Bedford Square Book Bang to tumultuous applause that summer. Original black boards, lettered in gilt; a few faint edge-spots, but a very good copy in the dust-jacket - the jacket a little sunned, worn and slightly chipped, with a relatively unobtrusive repaired tear and split to the rear panel extending to its full height. Contemporary May 1971 gift inscription, with twelve signatories, on front paste-down.

First British and first separate edition : a pencilled note states this to be the first issue, without the copyright notice on the verso of the title-page - a point not mentioned by Rolph. The unfinished and partly autobiographical novel, originally published with other material a few months earlier in the USA. With a foreword by Vernon Watkins. Crown 8vo (20cm). (116)pp. Original black boards, ruled and lettered in gilt; endpapers faintly tanned, but a very good copy in the original Gross-André dust-jacket - a design in purple, pink, black and white - a little sunned and tanned as usual, but also very good.

Hatch End : Poet & Printer, 1981. First edition : [one of 450 copies]. A collection of seventeen poems, including "Cricket", "Late Night Radio", "Minority Report", etc. Loosely inserted is a signed 1981 pre-printed letter from the publisher, Alan Tarling, to the late B. C. Bloomfield, concerning the origins of the press, its more commercial work, etc. Demy 8vo (22cm). (24)pp. Original fawn wrappers, lettered in purple and with a design by Andrew Lawson in red; a very good copy indeed in the original mailing envelope.

First performed at the Ambiance Lunch-Hour Theatre Club, "with outstanding success" in 1970, with Prunella Scales and Stephen Moore in the leading parts. Post 8vo (20cm). At that time probably better-known for his membership of "The Scaffold", and in particular "Lily the Pink", but here with his third solo collection of poems and already en route to becoming President of the Poetry Society. Forty-seven poems in three sequences - "There is the off-beat sense of humour and the compulsive juggling with sounds and appearances of words. But behind the smile is a very serious man with a highly individualistic perception, savagely satirical, and surprisingly lyrical" (Belfast Telegraph, 3rd December 1971). Demy 8vo (23cm). A book heralded as the first genuine children's novel set in California - and a cracking tale of the California Gold Rush as young Sam Gilman accompanies his father to San Francisco, where they arrive by sea on the Fourth of July. First published in New York earlier that year with the additional sub-title, "The Young Californian". Foolscap 8vo (166 x 100mm). [ii],(9)-214pp - pagination irregular, but collates as the British Library copy. Engraved frontispiece by Dalziel and title-page on plate paper. Bound in a stylish, perhaps French, half polished tan calf, delicately gilt on spine; marbled sides; red edges; just a touch rubbed; hairline split at head of upper joint, but solid and sound; a few minor marks and spots, but a very good and attractive copy. Blank ex-libris label covering an earlier ownership inscription.
