"Leave me woman; for heaven's sake, leave me; do not taunt me into madness ..." - a taut thriller from the enduringly popular Southampton-born writer who also went by the name of Joyce Emmerson Preston Muddock. Crown 8vo (20cm). vi,378pp. Original decorative cloth gilt; lightly rubbed and marked; endpapers lightly tanned, but still an attractive copy. London : Scion, (1953). First edition. Chicago gangland boss has a stunning new girlfriend - but his colleagues haven't been told. Although earlier "Hans Vogel" titles had mainly been written for the Glasgow publisher John Watson by Norman Lazenby, after Watson sold the rights in the name to Scion in 1952 authorship becomes less clear. In this instance, a contemporary American copyright registration attributes the work to Dail Ambler and Herbert Victor Lowes (i.e. Lowe) - Dail Ambler was the regular pseudonym of Betty Williams, also known by her married name of Betty Uelmen, who under her "Dail Ambler" and "Danny Spade" personas, became one of the most successful of all of the British pulp-writers. Also contains a number of poems not previously published in book form. Some 120 poems, including most of his most famous, compiled, edited and introduced by the Earl of Birkenhead. London : Chapman & Hall, 1879. First edition. A scarce late Trollope, featuring on Sadleir's "A"-list of rarities (XIX Century Fiction, 1951). Disinherited son makes good in the goldfields of Australia, returning home a wealthy man to marry Hester Bolton, but the delightfully wicked Euphemia Smith turns up to claim a prior marriage. Trollope makes interesting use of his Post Office experience to hinge the story on a forged postmark. "Mr Trollope has perhaps never hit upon a story that more strongly arouses the reader's attention and sympathy, and never told one with more mastery of the whole situation, in small things no less than in great" (The Graphic, 26th July 1879). London : Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co., 1903. A handsome and lavishly produced edition of Surtees' classic of sporting humour, produced for the Trübner Sporting Library series. John Jorrocks originally surfaced in the "New Sporting Magazine" in 1831, and first appeared in book form in 1838, but here appears with the original illustrations from all the various early editions - by Henry Alken, "Phiz" and William Heath - including an Alken illustration previously unpublished. With an interesting introduction on the history of the book and its illustrations by Joseph Grego (1843-1908), noted authority on illustration and its techniques.
