The First UK printing published by Chatto & Windus, London in 1960. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with gilt titling to the spine. Light toning to the spine tips. Light toning and spotting to the text-block. Some light offsetting to the prelims and red end-paper. Free from inscriptions. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Some light edge-wear with a few nicks and small closed tears. Light rubbing to the corners with a small area of loss to the lower front spine fold. The Una Bishop wrapper artwork looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The author has signed her name to the dedication page and has corrected the dedicatee from 'Janice' to 'Jamie' as she often did when signing this particular book. The author clarified this when she pointed out in a letter to John Baxter, the bibliophile that there is a 'curious little flaw' in the first edition of this book : 'There's a mistake in the dedication', which reads 'For Pat.and in memory of Janice'. A First UK printing published by Macmillan in 1975. The BOOK is in near FINE condition being tight and clean from inscriptions. There is very mild pushing at the spine ends and a hint of offsetting to the end papers. The book appears unread. There is the usual tanning of the pages due to the poor paper quality used at that time but less so than normally encountered . The WRAPPER is in near FINE condition with minimal edge wear and importantly NO fading of the front cover panel. The wrapper looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Loosely inserted is a paper bookplate which has been Inscribed and Signed by the author: ' With greetings from Oxford, and all good wishes always, Colin Dexter'. Extremely scarce title to find in such collectible condition and the first title in the iconic 'Inspector Morse' series. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
