A remarkably well preserved - and obviously unused - Colton pocket map of railroads through New England, upstate New York, Hudson Valley and lower Quebec Canada. Printed on tissue-weight paper which is as bright as we have seen as are the colored outlines of boundaries. Completely in original folds as issued, attached as issued to brown cloth booklet with gilt titles. Fully expanded approx 26.5" x 38." Colton started mapping railroads early on, around 1853: this one, dated 1884, shows almost the mature development of all lines running north and south and criss-crossing east west across New England and New York. There may be a copy as good as this one, but there will be none better!

Galena: The City of Galena, 1937., 1937. First edition. First edition. 8vo. Decorated wrappers, 79 [15] pp., maps including one folding in color affixed to inside rear wrapper, frontis., foreword, preface, general information, Galena bibliography, personal interviews. The first city guide book to be published in Illinois under the direction of the Works Progress Administration as represented by the Federal Writers' Project. Galena is in the northwest corner of Illinois six miles below the Wisconsin border and four miles from the Mississippi River. At one time it was a boom town, but the coming of railroads diverted its river traffic to Chicago and foreign competition killed its lead and zinc enterprises. An interesting and informative booklet that is scarce today. Not stated, but this is mostly the work of Nelson Algren. Fine copy. DYKES 81. POWELL 319.

An excellent, thoroughly researched biography on this important Sioux Chief. "Larson has provided a richly detailed history of Native life in the Northern Plains as well as the sequence of events that left the Lakota bereft of their homeland and their traditional way of life at the close of the nineteenth century. The biography is based on extensive research and the author appears to have uncovered just about every possible tidbit of factual information about Gall, who was overshadowed by Sitting Bull, his mentor, and the other Lakota notables of the era. That Gall was a formidable foe to both tribal enemies and the white trespassers on Lakota hunting grounds is well documented. The characters are The Lone Ranger, Zorro, and Robin Hood. Also included is a biographical sketch of Jock Mahoney and a listing of all of his films. Much is said about Durango's number one sidekick, Smiley Burnette. A wealth of information. Fine, unread copy.

A tale of murder and detection set in Mexico City, the story is reminiscent of Graham Greene's fictions and is considered by some to be one of her best novels. Ramon and Theodore are friends and both are Lelia's lovers. When Lelia is found murdered and mutilated, suspicion falls on both men. The real killer must be identified in order to prove their innocence.
