Lyndon, Kansas: Privately Printed, 1899., 1899. First edition. First Edition. Sewn Self-Wrappers. 52pp. A detailed account of this notorious raid on Lawrence, Kansas during which many citizens were killed and much of the town was destroyed. At dawn on August 21, 1863, William Quantrill and his guerrillas rode into Lawrence, where they burned much of the town and killed or seriously wounded between 160 and 190 men and boys. This raid was the culmination of an ongoing conflict between the Free-State forces who controlled Lawrence and the pro-slavery partisans who lived in nearby Missouri. In August 1863, the Union commander along the border, General Thomas Ewing, arrested several wives and sisters of members of a notorious band led by William Quantrill. This gang of outlaws had scorched the region, terrorizing and murdering Union sympathizers. Numerous illustrations and maps, index. An outstanding study of William Clarke Quantrill and the famous "Border Wars" in Kansas and Missouri in the 1860's. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Quantrill joined the Confederacy and fought at Lexington, Missouri. Preferring guerilla tactics, he organized his own gang of southern sympathizers. Although he failed to receive any Confederate endorsement or direct support, he and his men raided communities supposed to have Union sympathizers and robbed mail coaches. They frequently murdered citizens who were suspected of being Union sympathizers. In 1862, Quantrill and his gang were declared outlaws by Union officials. Some of the vignettes are of Quebec, Lake St. Joseph, Lake St. John, Lake Edward, Ouiatchouan Falls, the Hotel Roberval, the Bay of Tadoussac, an outdoor bread oven, etc. Much information on the towns, villages, and cities encountered along the route. Near fine, clean copy.

[Montreal: Southam Press Limited, n.d. (1918)]., 1918. First edition. First edition. 12 1/2" x 9 1/2" oblong quarto, tied, gold gilt, stamped, stiff wrappers with a mounted view of the bridge on the front cover, 103 pp., illustrated from photographs, diagrams, and drawings. Many stage-by-stage photographic views of the bridge as it nears completion. An enormous engineering project for its day that took from 1910 until 1917 to complete. In 1907, the south half of the first bridge over the river collapsed killing 100 men. In 1910, work began again and were nearing completion when the suspended bridge span that was being hoisted into place, fell into the river. The huge undertaking supports trains on two tracks. The over-sized stiff wrappers have a number of small closed tears along the extremities, but the interior is clean and quite serviceable, for an overall very good copy of a fascinating booklet.

Views of the Hotel Roberval at Lake St. John, group picture of Montagnais Indians, a group picture of Trappist Monks at Mistassini, the village of Chicoutimi, Capes Eternity and Trinity on the Saguenay River, the Bay of Tadoussac, etc. Much on fishing, fishing clubs, fishing notes and information, fishery laws of Quebec, trout fishing seasons, and game laws of Quebec. Front cover moderately soiled, internally clean and bright, else a very good copy of an informative booklet.

Schedules. "Founded in Baltimore in 1852 to operate a cargo and passenger steamship line between Baltimore and Boston, Mass. Services were disrupted by the American Civil War, but resumed in 1864. After a period of decline after the war, the company slowly recovered and by 1869 were able to order a new ship.
