Lesser-known novel by one of Portugal's most prolific authors. The illegitimate son of a poor family, Camillo Castello-Branco (1825-1890) was orphaned at a young age, and began his early career in the 1850s writing a series of Gothic tales. The present volume is one of his last of the genre, published a year following his release from prison for committing adultery with a married woman. Detailed diary of a trip to Japan embarked upon from Houston, Texas, beginning in March, 1939, and concluding in early May of that same year, on the eve of World War II.

Correspondences between John Bowles and a Mr. Adam expounding Bowles' fierce disapproval of the late Duke of Bedford (mainly for not displaying model Christian observance to Bowles' liking): "I should have never have been disposed to publish one word respecting the late Duke of Bedford, if I had not felt that the unqualified eulogies which were passed upon him [by Fox and others] had a tendency to corrupt the public sentiment by holding forth as a perfect character a noble man who, whatever his excellencies might be, was known to be deficient in his attendance on public worship." No copies currently on the market. Very few copies in institutions (British Library and University of London).

Mid-career novel by Green, and basis for the 1947 British film noir directed by Carol Reed and starring James Mason, Robert Newton, Cyril Cusack, and Kathleen Ryan (as well as Doctor Who's First Doctor, William Hartnell, as Fencie the Barman). The film won a BAFTA for Best British Film, and was nominated by the Academy for Best Editing.
