Fine in a Near Fine, unclipped dustjacket, lightly worn along lower edge, with a few tiny tears. A nice copy of the author's first book, written 15 years prior to 'A Is For Alibi.'.

More than likely this copy was inscribed during the filming of 'Nobody Lives Forever' in 1946, a film directed by Negulesco and based on a book and screenplay by Burnett. A novel about an Ohio Governor named Read Cole, whose initial concerns for real issues become subsumed by political forces as he rises to the top of the heap. An important cautionary tale on the dangers of the political machine, preceding Robert Penn Warren's 'All The King's Men' by nealy a decade. A scarce, early Burnett title, and a tremendous association. First Printing. Octavo; green cloth, with titles stamped in black and orange on spine and front panel; dustjacket; 292pp. Inscribed by Burnett opposite the title page to director Jean Negulesco: "For Jean Negulesco - a good director and a good guy. A fine association copy - Baxter would go on two write the first serious study on Vidor for the Monarch Film Studies series in 1976. First Impression. Octavo (22cm); navy blue paper-covered boards, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; dustjacket; xiv,[2],3-239,[3]pp, with an additional 16pp of photographs. Inscribed on the front endpaper to Australian writer, journalist, and film-maker John Baxter: "To John Baxter / With the best wishes of King Vidor / London 10-7-74." Scattered foxing to upper edge of textblock, a few faint, tiny stains to lower edge of textblock, else Near Fine and clean throughout. Philadelphia: Middle Earth Books, 1972. First Edition. A well-preserved copy of one of Smith's earliest works - one of three chapbooks published the same year that Seventh Heaven, her first full-length book, was published by Telegraph Books. This collection of poems was published by the Philadelphia-based bookshop Middle Earth Books, founded in 1969 and owned by Samuel and Sims Amico. Their shop, located at 1134 Pine Street, was a hub for the underground literary and arts scene, hosting readings as well as embarking on a publishing venture. In a 1995 interview, when A.D. Amorosi asked Smith about the significance of Middle Earth Books, she replied: "If it wasn't my first reading, it was the first out-of-town thing because I was living in New York at the time, which made it very exciting. Like a first job...I was 22 and Robert Mapplethorpe and I were living together...in the Chelsea Hotel and he took the Polaroid for the cover.
