A distinguished copy of this well-received narrative of Robinson's life, chronicling his early upbringing, career in sports, and his breaking of the color line to become the first African American to play Major League Baseball. Carl Thomas Rowan (1925-2000) was a noted African American journalist and diplomat, whose career in journalism began in 1948 at the Minneapolis Tribune, who hired him as one of only a handful of Black general assignment reporters in the country. "His first major assignment was a series of articles on African American life in the Deep South, for which he traveled six thousand miles in six weeks" (AANB Vol.7, p.20). Boston: Houghton, Osgood and Company, 1878. First Edition. A sharp copy of James's first novel, serialized between August-December, 1871 in the Atlantic Monthly. It did not appear in book format until Osgood proposed publication in April, 1878. James implemented moderate revisions to the text between the serialization and it's appearance in book format; even so, he was ashamed of the novel, all but disowning it in his later life, and choosing rather to favor Roderick Hudson as his debut. A sharp copy of Cheever's first book, a collection of 30 short stories written between 1930-1942, with several of them previously published in the pages of Collier's, The New Yorker, Story Magazine, Yale Review, and Harper's Bazaar. While the book was critically well-received, it was a poor seller. Cheever (and later, his family) was persistently resistant to allowing the stories here to be included in subsequent collections of his work. First Printing, one of 2,750 copies. The Berkeley poet and magazine editor's first book, a poetic tribute to San Francisco, published by d.a. levy's Cleveland-based Seven Flowers Press. Each copy bore an original watercolored cover by Mara. Scarce, with no copies for sale in the trade (July, 2019), and 9 holdings in OCLC. Taylor & Horvath P-133. One of 250 copies. Quarto (28cm); mimeographed leaves (rectos), side-stapled, with an original watercolor glued on as front wrapper; [ii],6pp. Two faint horizontal folds smoothed-out, mild toning to extremities, with a small loss to upper right corner of terminal leaf, and a few faint splash marks to upper margins and terminal leaf; Very Good+.

San Pedro: Brown Buddha Books, 1986. First Edition. Handsome edition, produced in small numbers to commemorate Bukowski's marriage to Linda Lee Beighle. "Of these 40 copies, six were given to the Bukowski's to distribute to their friends; these six copies each had a corrected (from Beigle to Beighle) colophon tipped in; the remaining 34 copies contain the original colophon. Also in these six copies the photograph of Linda mending Bukowski's clothing on p.16 has been replaced with a photograph of the bride and groom dancing" (Krumhansl 97, p.112). Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow Press, 1978. First Edition. An exquisite production by the Black Sparrow Press, and the final issue of Sparrow magazine, containing 12 poems by Charles Bukowski. While the simultaneous issue in wrappers was produced in a run of 1,402 copies, the cloth issue remains among the scarcest and tiniest limitations of any of Bukowski's books. [Berkeley, CA]: Tangram, 1993. First Edition. Warm association copy, inscribed to McClure's long-time friend and Oyez Press publisher Robert Hawley, who designed the chapbook for McClure's long poetic manifesto Poisoned Wheat (1965). They distributed the chapbook directly to readers whom they felt might have some influence on U.S. policy in Southeast Asia. Together, the two men mailed 600 copies of the poem (cf. Encyclopedia of Beat Literature, p.263). One of 190 copies. Slim octavo (25.5cm); unprinted string-tied wrappers; hand-made paper dustjacket, with title label mounted to front cover; [24]pp, with illustrated frontispiece by Amy Evans. Small bifolium (20cm); single sheet of stiff cream wove paper, letterpress printed in red, gold, and black, folded once to create a [4]pp pamphlet. A Fine copy. Elegant separate edition of this poem excerpted from Love Is A Dog From Hell, issued to coincide with the opening of a prestigious Santa Barbara antiquarian book firm. Krumhansl 59.

Roth's third book, and his only novel with a female protagonist - "a Midwestern girl who believes herself to be the moral superior of her family and friends, and how she and those around her are destroyed when she sets out to prove that in matters of right and wrong she is the ultimate authority" (from front flap). A significant association copy inscribed to Alison Lurie (1926-2020), winner of the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and the second of eight printed dedicatees noted by Roth. When Lurie was interviewed by Liz Lear in 1988 and asked if any other writers had been supportive of her work, or if there was one in particular to whom she owed a debt of gratitude, she mentioned Edward Hower, Diane Johnson, and Roth. An excellent copy of what is perhaps the best-loved and most distinguished illustrated children's book of the 20th century, one that the American Institute of Graphic Arts called "the perfect book." Inscribed by Sendak to Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and translator Richard Howard (1929-2022) and his then partner, author and playwright Sanford Friedman (1928-2010). Howard and Sendak both spent time on Fire Island during the 1960s, where Sendak wrote Where the Wild Things Are, and the men were part of a tightly-knit circle of queer authors and artists in New York during that period. By the mid-1970s, Howard and Sendak had drifted apart, though this copy is evidence of a once closer friendship. While erroneously dated (the book was published in November, 1963 - this copy was actually inscribed on January 9, 1964, not 1963), it still remains among the earliest recorded inscriptions in copies of Where the Wild Things Are. Greenwich: Gold Medal, 1961. First Edition. New. First Printing. A Near Fine copy of Willeford's pseudonymous novel, a dark S&M affair. The spine is faintly slanted with a few glue ridges running down the center, and the yellow edgestaining is a touch uneven at the side of the textblock. Appears unread, and the kinky Bob Abbett cover does tend to leave a lasting impression. This is a Review Copy, with the original Gold Medal slip laid in. Published under the sole by-line of W. Franklin Sanders. In his files, Willeford had a manuscript of this novel called "Deliver Me From Dallas!" by "W. Franklin Sanders and Charles Willeford." Willeford's name is never mentioned on the Review Slip, though the publisher's description of Sanders sounds a whole lot like him. One of the less common Willeford paperback originals, especially so as a Review Copy.
