Details a very important event and period of observations - the arrival and the life of Zuluana over the 18 months from when she first arrived at Pretoria. Her age was known to within a day and this was the first instance that a White Rhinocerous had found its way to a Zoological Garden.

William Smith (1769-1839) was known as ‘the Father of English Geology’ and famous for producing the first geological map of Britain (1815). The charming plates illustrate the plans of watermeadows made out of a bog on Prisley Farm.

Charming handwritten letter bound in at front dated 20 Nov. 1876 from North Wales Central Botanic Gardens to a member of the public searching for a copy of this title. Adrian Hardy Howarth (1768-1833) was a British botanist and entomologist being President of The Entomological Society of London from 1806 to 1822. During his lifetime he was the author of 60 publications, primarily concerned with succulent plants and lepidoptera. The facsimile of �Observations on the Genus Mesembryanthemum� published in 1965 by Gregg Press was taken from this copy.

Exhibition card for this work and a copy of Taxon magazine’s review of the book both loosely inserted. ‘Ocean Flowers’ explores a little-known moment of exhilarating artistic experimentation. The book focuses on natural-history imagery in the mid-nineteenth century, with particular emphasis on botanical drawings, cyanotypes and photograms by the artist Anna Atkins (1799-1871) and her Victorian contemporaries. The book accompanied an exhibition of the same name.
