Constable, Printers to His Majesty, at Edinburgh University Press." Ex-library. Maroon red endpapers coordinate nicely with the frontispiece portrait of John Napier, Baron of Merchiston in color, reproduced from a painting owned by the University of Edinburgh. Engraved library bookplate and two blindstamps are among the front matter; also an inked stamp with collection notation in pen. Condition: Very Good. Edges, especially top edge, are a bit dusty, and there is slight soiling to the cream colored exterior, a bit of darkening to the spine.Some mild crimping to head and foot of spine. Boards are triple-ruled and rolled with gilt flowers and banners. All edges gilt. Gilt rules also appear on board edges and end caps. Inside, the turn-ins feature a slightly different gilt rope & flower rolled decoration. Blue and white marbled endpapers. No bookbinder's signature. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low and Searle, 1882 pp x + 505; vii + 504 + ads. Inscribed by Weppner to front free endpaper: "To Mr & Mrs Henry Bush, with the kindly wishes from Margaretha Weppner. Port Townsend, December 5th, 1884". Weppner was a German language teacher who sailed from France to the US in 1869, thence to Japan, China, Saigon, Singapore, Java and Batavia, then back to Singapore, Calcutta, Delhi, Bombay, Suez, Cairo, Alexandria and finally back to Munich, Germany. Henry Bush, to whom the book is inscribed, was the United States Shipping Commissioner at Port Townsend. Condition: almost Fine, with light shelfwear to the covers, and light rubbing to the spine gilt.. Signed by author. American edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.
