Sir John Sinclair (1754 - 1835) was a Scottish writer, famous for his survey of Scottish life, the "Statistical Account of Scotland", published between 1791 and 1799. In this volume, Sinclair describes some of the words and phrases of the Scots language (which he calls a "dialect") and their derivations (e.g. from Latin, Belgic, Saxon etc). Chromolithographed illustrations by Englishman Henry Matthew Brock (1875-1970), Cambridge School of Art graduate, illustrator of Charles Dickens and other books, worked as well in advertising. He also contributed illustrations to the magazine "Punch." Merrill (d. 1935) about the early settlement of the Northern Adirondack Chateaugay Lakes region of New York, to the west of Lake Champlain. First published in 1875, this was the most popular work of the author, remaining in publication until 1914. Mary Cecil Hay (1839-1886) was a prolific British writer, often working under a male pseudonym. This story of the supposed murder of a wealthy aging uncle by his nephew was "ripped from the headlines," based partly on the story of the murder of William Maxwell, 5th Earl of Nithsdale in 1716, who like the nephew in Hay's story, escaped from execution dressed as a woman.
