King (1875-1949). The pictorial paste downs feature two different color landscape watercolor reproductions by the Edinburgh-born Artist Richard Hope (signed); the front is of boats on the Thames. The rear double pastedown is a lovely autumnal view of Edinburgh Castle, seen from below. Additionally, the frontispiece and title page feature art by Russell W. Volume 2, (published 1972) is taken from the 1869 edition. These are "informal vignettes," collected from the author's newspaper columns appearing in the "Portsmouth Journal of Literature and Politics," between 1840 and 1860. The author shared his passion for Portsmouth's splendid old houses, dating from colonial to Federalist times, and stories of the people who lived in them. Hard cover, 12 mo. in publisher's tan cloth with filigree design enclosed by banding in blind to the boards, centering a jaunty nautical scene of three clipper ships in gilt, 295 pp. Spine with faded decoration in gilt, title and words: "250 Cuts. " Three tales of Caribbean adventure and piracy, written by the 19th century New Hampshire-born clergyman and prolific author John Lauris Blake (1788-1857). Blake graduated from Brown University before becoming a Methodist minister. The Preface mentions an 1829 trip to Cuba influencing these stories. Also includes : "The Brazilian" and "The Montero of Cuba." 12 decorative full-page engraved plates (lacking one on p. 294) and other smaller embellishments to text. Fiorenza: Nella Stamperia di Giorgio Marescotti, 1580 Hard cover 4to (measuring 6 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches,) in the original full vellum case, which appears to have been "updated," perhaps in the eighteenth century, with an onlaid additional layer of vein-painted parchment to resemble tree calf. (Perhaps made to match a collector's library.) An old calligraphic red ink title is lettered along the bottom of the text block, while the spine has the title, in a different hand, neatly lettered in black ink. Two woodcut printer's devices are present, with the initials "GM,": one on the title page measuring 1 3/4 x 2 inches, and a larger one upon the book's final page measur. 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches.
