Later calf boards, light chipping to outer edges, rebacked in modern calf with silver gilt title to spine. Some minor foxing, few minor ink stains, short corner tear to A2, no affect. Few leaves with top margins trimmed close. Minor pencil notes throughout. Few pages mis-paginated, as usual, still continuous collation and complete. Overall, a nice copy in a sympathetic binding. Mathias Prideaux (1622-1646), second son of John Prideaux (1578-1650). Mathias, student of Exeter 1640-1645, before receiving his M.A. became a captain in the kingÕs service. Mathias died of smallpox in London about 1646, this book his only, edited and published after his death by his father. We believe this to be the original 1641 woodcut, though there is a 19th-century copy very similar. Portrait of Edward Finch (fl.1630-1641), English Royalist divine, standing and holding a book, with three children in front of him, and more children behind, and a horse and carriage to the left with inscription Ôaway for hamersmithÕ. ÒThe printe represents Edward Finch in canonicals and apparently drunk (inebriety being one of his alleged crimes), as if at the door of his church, holding a book... In the background is a tavern with Chequers over the door. Finch was accused of drunkeness at the ÒChequers in DowgateÓ. In front is a coach, with a man and woman insideÕ above it is written Òaway for hamersmithÓ. A very rare bibliography from the curator of the Burroughs Memorial Collection of Louisville Library. At time of description we only locate two other copies for sale, at a much higher price.

Archbishop of Worcester, London, and York (1559-1588), and father to well known scholar and writer George Sandys. Edwin Sandys was also one of the translators of the Bishops Bible.

He discusses the life of Sarah and other old testament women as an example for Veronica Weiss the daughter of Anton Weiss. VD 16 N1352.

An excellent near fine copy. We find no copies of this edition for sale at time of description nor any reference via several search engines online of the edition at all. OCLC lists only 2 copies of this edition. With frontispiece. Thomas Gray (1716-1771), Englisj poet, letter-writer, scholar and professor at Pembroke Cambridge. Best known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard first published in 1751. Elegy is still one of the most popular and frequently quoted poems in the English language.
