The leaf portrays the angel Gabriel comforting Daniel - Daniel VIII:17. with text lines beneath. Excellent woodblock and leaf in excellent condition. Top corners with a little bit of bleed from previous adhesive on verso overall excellent and suitable for framing. 7.5 x 4.75 inches. The reproduction fomr the Douce & Dibdin were cut from wood by Messrs. Bonner and Byfield. The authors aimed to provide extremely accurate woodcut representations of the original Holbein designs to readers. This leaf shows the clarity of line and beautiful use of light and shade which Holbein had achieved in his original work .

Full contemporary calf, rebacked with old spine laid-on, corners worn , old owner's names on t.p., some foxing, a good copy. Gavantius (1569-1638), liturgist and member of the Barnabite order, was general of his order and named perpetual consultor to the Congregation of Rites by Pope Urban VIII. Early on he dedicated himself to the study of liturgy, and this was his chief work. It traces the historical origin of the rites, discusses their mystical significance, and gives rules for their observance and obligation of the rubrics. Cardinals Millino, Muto, and Cajetan approved it, and it was dedicated to Urban VIII. Cuvernon was a doctor of the Sorbonne Gavanti: BL 17th Italian 382. Camerini, Giunta, Venice 1316.

Offenburg (modern Baden) was a town of some 2,000-3,000 inhabitants, rigidy Catholic and Jesuit directed (through its schools). It was ruled by a town council (Rath) of 22 members with 2 ex-officio priests.
