Miner's Bank.  There is also a  1 p. letter from Berry P. Churchill to J.A. Rasbach, Little Falls, February 18, 1856. Collection of hand written banking documents with apparent relevance to the Remington Arms Company on letterheads of various historical banks in Upstate New York State.  Most are addressed to J.A. Rasbach who was John Adam Rasbach (1805-1892), an attorney and cashier of the American Exchange Bank in Ilion, New York.  Herkimer County history notes that: "In 1852 Ilion became an incorporated village. Broadside in 4to.  310 x 235 mm., [12 x 9 ¼ inches].  Caption, and ten stanzas of verse in two columns, within an ornamental border.  Sheet somewhat dust-soiled with a few minor stains, surface wear along folds, one corner slightly chipped, &c. Still, entirely sound, and with good margins. The Battle of Cedar Creek was fought in the Shenandoah Valley on October 19, 1864. Surprised by the Confederate forces under the command of Jubal Early, the Union troops were nearly routed. Riding to the battlefield from Winchester, twenty miles away, Gen. Philip Sheridan rallied the troops and carried the day. This action occasioned the slightly more famous poem by Thomas Buchanan Read. Private Maynard's poem centers more narrowly on the actions of the 28th Iowa. Milano: Paolo Antonio Tosi, 1838.  Second edition of this standard work on the early romances and chivalric poetry written by Italian writers during the 15th and 16th centuries.  It includes descriptions of 820 editions, with an extensive index of authors and titles included.  This is the one of the earliest annotated bibliographies listing the editions with notes of the works of Ludovico Ariosto, cited 241 printed editions.  He also describes with annotations editions of the works of , Matteo Maria Boiardo (20 editions), Luigi Pulci (31 editions), Pietro Aretino, Lodovico Dolci, Torquato Tasso and dozens more.  The concludes with a useful index and a list of bibliographies used in his research. With the bookplate of Anthony Hobson.  First edition of Moreni's first major work, still a standard book on the bibliography of Tuscany. Based on a collection of books and manuscripts that Moreni collected, this bibliographical study of the history and literature of Florence and Tuscany includes over 7,500 entries, many with significant annotations. The contents are still useful today and scholars of Florence in particular find it filled with interesting and informative notes that are not found elsewhere. Second edition revised and augmented.  4to.  16, 266 pp.  Contemporary limp vellum showing some wear, with a minor repair to the lower part of the spine; some light foxing to the text. Biblioteca Italiana, the first catalogue of its kind published as a guide for collectors, was originally published by Haym in 1726 in London for the benefit of English collectors and librarians.  It was highly successful and was reprinted in Italy several times.  It is based on the work of Giusto Fontanini, the noted Italian librarian, collector, and author, who wrote and compiled a catalogue describing books from the collection of Cardinal Imperiali that was published in 1711.   Haym arranged his catalogue by subject for easy use and quick reference and includes descriptions of over 3500 titles.  His work is introduced by an essay on Italian printing by Fontanini dated 1706 and is notable for its geographical table of contents and an extensive index.  It… Leer más

Part I is a history of the library at the University of Genoa with descriptions of its various collections, especially as associated with travel and voyages and the New World.  Part II is a history of the Archivio di Genova, with seven articles on its origins and development over eight centuries.  This is followed by a catalogue of an exhibition, featuring 74 items,  describing the hightlights from the collection.

(10 1/4 x 8 inches).  xii, 476 pp. Title-page in red and black, with an engraved bignette portraying the hall of the Capponi Library; decorative woodcut initial letter throughout.  Uncut copy printed on strong paper; some scattered foxing and a few spots most prominently on the half-title.  Contemporary paste-paper boards, title and date in ink on the spine.  Expert paper repair to joints and hinges, boards toned by dust.  With faults a very good, large copy on thick paper. Printed exhibition catalogue of books, manuscripts, and drawings from the collections of the Biblioteca Comunale degli Intronati of Siena, exhibited to celebrate the visit of the Madison Council of the Library of Congress in 2011.  Rich in content and images.

Edinburgh: Privately Printed, 1887. Three volumes in one.  Small 8vo.  56 pp; 80 pp; 42, xxiv pp.  Bound in original brown cloth, paper label on spine; spine chipped with some loss, tips bumped.  With the bookplate of Abbey date 1933 and the acquisition notation "J. A. 105/6.5.1935" in blue ink on rear pastedown. A standard book, printed in an edition of 275 small paper copies and 75 large paper copies. This small paper copy includes manuscript notations about copies purchased by Abbey, some with condition reports, binding notations and price paid.  With faults an interesting copy. .

Paris. Paris: Maisonneuve & Cie, 1867. 8vo.  viii, 407 pp.  Bound in contemporary vellum spine and tips, marbled paper boards, red leather label; final 10 leaves with lower corners worn away.  This copy with a late 19th century Italian bookseller's description which reads in part, "Catalogue très important et recherché pour l'exacte description bibliographique de 1647 ouvrages ayant rapport à Amerique".  With faults a good to very good copy.  Leclerc's catalogue, Bibliotheca Americana, is one of the most important lists of books on the Americas published in the 19th century.  Including 1647  lots, most with detailed annotations, the books in this collection document the vast field of European Americana in addition to many of the fundamental works published in England and America during the formation of the nation.   Sabin writes in part, "it includes a careful collation of each book, and in many instances analyses and important notes. . With deaccession stamp of the University of Vermont. Useful as a reference copy only; priced in pencil with a few buyer's names included.  Complete catalogue of this important sale of American, which contains many 16th and 17th century early printed books relating to the New World.  The catalogue include Henry Stevens's descriptions of 2545 lot, many with informative annotations.  The "Explanatory" or preface to the catalogue provides a very good overview of the contents of the collection and the reason for its sale.  Of the sale McKay writes, "In April, 1870 came the Henry Stevens sale, with its interesting preface by Henry Stevens, Jr. . . George L. Mckay, American Book Auction Catalogues, 1540.

New York, 1852. 8vo.  225 x 150 mm., [8 ¾ x 6 inches].  [2], 235, [1] pp., [viii], 48 pp. Original leather-backed boards; leather spine rubbed and dry, with the text block light foxed throughout.   Amazing collection of books for sale in the early 1850's, when the explosive growth in American publishing was taking off.  Private collectors and libraries were building collections of books for mechanics halls, local libraries, and schools all over the country and the demand for printed material was growing with it.  This catalogue issued by Putnam, one of the first after establishing his own firm in 1848 after leaving Wiley and Putnam, is one of the largest of its kind issued to date.  Incorporating both newly published, imported, and antiquarian books, the catalogue covers all fields of literature, history, travel, the arts and science, and law.  It also includes children's books in all these fields.  The index which covers over forty pages, is organized by subject is an extremely useful… Leer más

Original brown cloth, title in gilt on spine; cloth boards discolored otherwise a sound and attractive copy. First and only edition. Encyclopedic work on the leather and shoe trade that includes detailed historical information of the manufacture of boots and shoes. Richardson text also acts as a guide or manual to techniques of the trade and offer opinions on the machinery required for fine finished products. He includes information on both English and French styles of shoes and provides patterns for manufacture. Reviewed at the time by G. S. Hillard and called "an interesting and instructive book." Bennington (VT): Printed by J. I. C. & A. S. C. Cook, 1843. 8vo. 180 x 10 mm., (7 x 4 1/4 inches). 304 pp. Full contemporary calf, a bit rubbed at spine but sound and attractive; some light foxing throughout. Ownership stamp of A. Robertson on front fly leaf and the signature of Frank Streeter of Glens Falls, New York on rear pastedown. Quite a nice copy of the first edition of Robertson's Book of Health. The author, writing for a rural populations adopts the medical approach of Samuel Thomson, which emphasized the use of local botanical specimens and herbs to manage most medical issues. The book begins with a critique of modern medical practices, an interesting insight into diagnosis and prescriptions of mid-19th century medicine in America. He then describes in some detail remedies for hundreds of medical conditions using the Thomsonian theory. Cordasco 401133. "Take charge of your own bodies." OCLC cites six copies in American libraries.

Cleveland, Ohio: Cleveland Morning Leader, 1865. Large Folio. 610 x 500 mm. ( 24 x 20 inches). 4 pp. Illustrated on page 2 with a Funeral Monument in Memory of Abraham Lincoln. Folded with minor breaks at folds, otherwise very good copy. Volume XIX, No. 102, of the Cleveland Morning Leader, issued on Friday morning April 28, 1865. This edition was the first in Northern Ohio to announce the capture and killing of John Wilkes Booth.  The newspaper carries an extensive report on the tracking, locating and killing of the assassin and the firing of the tobacco barn at the Garrett Farm in Port Royal, Virginia where he was shot and subsequently died on the morning of April 27th. This announcement on the 28th of April of Booth's death occurred the same day that Lincoln's Funeral Cortege arrived in Cleveland and Lincoln's casket was on view until midnight of April 29th, when it moved on to Columbus and then on to Springfield, Illinois. (North Haven?, Maine?), 1864. 4to. broadside.  255 x 167 mm. [10 x 6 ¾ inches].  12 stanzas of verse in two columns, with woodcut engraving of large sailing ship set beneath the title. American Navy Civil War verse broadside from North Haven Island, Maine,written by Harrison Beverage.  The broadside lists many names of sailors from North Haven and ships that they served on. The names included are Hanson Carver, the Brown's - Eben & John, the Alexanders - James, Ezekiel & Zena. They served on board the School Ship Sabine, The Ohio a ship of the line, The steamship Colorado, the Rhode Island and on board the Monitor Menadnoc with a couple of them getting wounded in battle. The piece also tells about the battle at Fort Fisher and Commodore Porter. Rare.
