First edition, second issue, originally published in 1833; a second edition appeared in 1837.  Rare school book, published for the education of the liberal public.  According to the author, this is the first book of its kind published in America, which concentrates on the history, criticism, and interpretation of the fine arts, including paintings, sculpture and music.  The author looks to Italy, Scotland, and Germany for the historical sketches he offers creates a critique based on a particularly American perspective.  One of the more interesting aspects of the book is that he devotes the first two pages of Chapter XV to the works of William Blake.  Page 104 is devoted to American painting.Josiah Holbrook was the founder of the Lyceum movement in American and author of numerous book and… Leer más

Bound in publisher's cloth; faded, remnants of paper label on spine; wanting front free endpaper, some light spotting to the text, especially at the inner margin. Second? American edition; originally published in London in 1817, followed by a Philadelphia edition, ca.1830. As much a manual for cleaning used textiles as a guide to dyeing. Interesting from the point of view of establishing and succeeding at a second hand business, where old materials are recycled by cleaning, bleaching and dyeing. This edition is fully indexed. Rink 1870 for the Philadelphia edition. OCLC cites many copies of all edition in American libraries. (376).

Middleborough, Plymouth County, 1839. 8vo.  185 x 155 mm., [6 x 7 ¼ inches] .Manuscript in ink.   89 pp.  Marbled boards, calf spine. Cover and corner wear, some cover separation, few pages torn. Text written in legible hand. Accounts of a farmer from the town of Middleborough which show entries ranging from purchased foodstuffs to money received for work mowing and plowing fields and cutting and delivering cords of wood.  These accounts show the date, the work or item, and the payment. Several notes reveal that farmhands moved onto the property at various times: "1844 William Tinkham moved in to my house... Novem 4th 1842 William Carter moved into my house."  There is a record of payment for work performed by temporary employees of farm in Middleborough. There are a few pages which indicate that the farmer, whose name is not shown, may be Lorenzo Wood (1792-1860). One page shows "A. Rochester, Massachusetts, 1856. Folio.  330 x 210 mm., [13 x 9 inches]. Manuscript in ink and pencil.  5 pp. Bound in paper wrappers; a few loose receipts. Index of customer names at front of ledger.  Paper stock brown with age and with some  light foxing, but sound.  Rare account book from the small town of Rochester which dates to 1638 and was known mostly for logging and farming having lost its coastline to the establishment of Marion town in 1852. James Ruggles (1795-1877) was a farmer, store keeper, and merchant in Rochester, near Mattapoiset, Massachusetts. At one time he was elected the town clerk of Rochester. His name is derived from a loose receipt he signed. Accounts are set up as "by and to" on opposing pages and include the sale of molasses, fabric, saleratus, thread, tobacco, sugar and so on. On the purchase side are listed board and plank to make a boat, expenses of horses to Mattapoisett and New Bedford, and include foodstuffs. At the end of the book are pages noting that… Leer más

Philadelphia: Crissy & Markley, Printers, 1849. 12mo. 160 x 100 mm., [6 ¼ x 4 inches]. 144 pp. Bound in contemporary sheep, rubbed, simple leather repair to lower quarter of the spine; lightly foxed. Originally published in 1842, Pedder's book went through numerous editions well into the 1860's. It was considered one of the standard survey books of the period and was especially desirable for the measurement of larger parcels of land in the American west and became a tool for as farmers and settlers who pushed past the Mississippi River.

New York: Architectural Book Publishing Co., Inc, 1925. Folio.  310 x 240 mm., [12 x 9 ¼ inches].  13 pp. text.  Illustrated with a frontispiece and 126 photogravures.  Original gray cloth, decorated with the title in blue; dust jacket, with a chip at the head of the spine.  Very good copy. Rare and attractive architectural history of the provinces of Abruzzi, Apulia, Basilicata, Campania, and Lazio.  Photos taken over many years by the intrepid traveler, Marian Hooker, whose interest in the by-ways of the Italian South contrasted with the major productions documenting the major cities of the North.  In the preface written by Katherine Hooker, Marian's mother and author of several books on Italy, writes, "a journey to the south-eastern portion [of Italy] is not so easy or so often taken, though it affords the traveler an interesting and surprising field in which to trace the racial records that survive in its architecture."  The book also includes an appreciation by Myron Hunt of the Allied… Leer más

First English edition.   Collection of Pavese's early short stories, written before he graduated to the novel form in the 1930's.  The stories are personal in nature and  reflect his politics, his imprisonment and exile, his failure in love, and the social condition in Italy during the Fascist period.  Pavese translated English and America short stories and essay in the literary journal La Cultura and became its editor in 1934.  .

First edition.  Bestselling biography of Lorenzo Ghiberti and Filippo Brunelleschi and the competition to design and fabricate the main doors and the dome of the Church of St. John in Florence.  Well researched and readable, Walker's book include a history of Florence during the 15th century and includes cameos of Donatello, Cosimo de' Medici, Leon Battista Alberti and other notable Florentines of the period. .

(16 ¼ x 11 ½ inches). 13 full-page etchings printed in sanguine on laid paper, each plate with a loosely inserted guard sheet (also of laid paper) with 5 dark pencil points marked as guides to the artists. Early 19th-century red leather spine and tips over marbled paper boards. Leather ownership label with the name "Lebzeltern" (Ludwig von Lebzeltern) on the front board. Binding lightly rubbed, very good copy.  Rare series of etchings, by the well-known Italian artist Carlo Labruzzi (1748-1817) created for the Countess Bessbourough, Henrietta Frances Duncannon, the daughter of the noted English book collector the Earl of Spencer. During the years 1792-95 she traveled throughout Italy and must have struck up a friendship with Labruzzi while in Rome in order for this curious series of etchings to be created. This is Marshall Perry's first book, prepared for use in schools. This is the first catalogue describing the combined collections of the Providence Athenaeum (est. 1831) and the Providence Library Company, both of which dissolved their organizations and  reemerged in 1836, calling itself simply The Athenaeum. In addition to the combined libraries the catalogue includes recent acquisitions and gifts that came after the merger and the movement of the collection to its Benefit Street location.  The contents page details the breath of the collection including the fine and ancient arts, geography, history, classics and translations, law and politics, novels, drama and poetry natural history, philosophy and mathematics, philology and rhetoric, and bibliography. Visible image size 340 x 258 mm., [13 ½ x 10 inches.]; frame size 420 x 370 mm., [16 ½ x 14 ½ inches].  Illustrated with woodcut image very well executed and printed in deep rich black ink.  Some minor shadow effect from large wood type, text and image printed within a decorative border. Appears to be in very good condition although not removed from the frame.  Will remove upon request. The woodcut image of the large, virile stallion rearing against the reins and constraints imposed by the hot walker, is beautifully cut and printed.  The broadside is surprisingly clean as the ink used to accentuate the cut has not oxidized.  In the background is a young black child walking a white horse, presumably the mare suggested by the advertisement.  Although unsigned the woodcut is expertly designed and cut with delicate parallel line which accentuates the movement of the stallion. First edition of Rachel Kushner's second novel, set in New York City and Italy, which explores "the mystique of the feminine, the fake, and the terrorist.  At its center is Kushner's brilliantly realized protagonist, a young woman on the verge" .

Issued as part of Appleton's Library for Young People. Original blue cloth decorated in gilt and blind. Light edgewear and two dark spots on cover. Minor foxing. Overall, an attractive copy. Author Maria Jane McIntosh (1803-1878) wrote stories for children starting in the 1840s under the pseudonym "Aunt Kitty." A number of the works, including this one, were collected and published by Appleton in 1847 under the title Aunt Kitty's Tales. While various versions have been published, this edition is scarce and no exact copies can be found in OCLC. McIntosh also wrote eight novels for adults and published nonfiction work. Popular during her lifetime, McIntosh supported herself with her writing and never married. Small tear to lower margin, some minor discoloration to the paper, otherwise very good.Patent number 24.375, signed by Clough and Burrell and witnessed by A. Sidney Drane and I. Townsend Cannon. Received by Arthur L. McIntire of Director of the Patent Office. The patent record located online dates the application and drawing to June 14, 1859.  It reads in part that Isaac Clough and Samuel Burrell, "have invented a new and Improved Fly and Mosquito Trap and hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. . ." The record goes on to describe all the components of the drawings, how the 'trap' is constructed and operated, and some information about a competing trap patented by T. Gilbert and T. M. Detroit, Mich., U.S.A.: Ideal Manufacturing Company, 1900. 8vo. 230 x 150 mm., (9 x 6 inches). 96 pp. Illustrated throughout. Original printed wrappers, stitched as issued; a few tears to the edges of wrappers and some toning of the paper stock, otherwise very good. The Ideal Manufacturing Company of Detroit was an old and well-know company which was found in 1887 and sold in 1912 to Colwell Lead Company of New York. This is one of its trade catalogues which featured the toilets and water cabinets which it manufactured. The catalogue also includes images and descriptions of its pipe fittings and traps. There is also a description and illustration of its Centrifugal Trap which increased the velocity of water flow through the pipes. Nice copy.

Illustrated with 120 half tone images and 16 maps.   Original green cloth, decorated in red on upper board;, scuffed with some minor rubbing to edges and tips, front hinge cracked; missing dust jacket, part of which is pasted to the rear endpaper.  Presentation copy from Helen Rhoda Hooper to Maurice Kellogg dated May 29, 1947. Well illustrated history of Naples from its orgins to end of World War I.  Written in the form of a daily diary, Maurel's exploration of the people and monuments of the city carries the reader to nearly every street, piazza and building in Naples and provides historical context to metropolis on Mediterranean.
