The front endpaper (which is to say the rear endpaper, the book being bound back-to-front in the traditional Japanese style) has been signed, dated (November 8, 1984), and inscribed by Abe to long-time Knopf senior editor Charles Elliott. The inscription is entirely in Japanese, although Abe has also added his first name in a stylized Arabic script. A fine, as new copy in a very good slipcase, which lacks the original tissue paper covering, and shows partial fading to the spine of the red bellyband. Herbert Rowbarge details the successful but unhappy life of the titular character through the lens of his adult twin daughters. Having been separated from his own twin brother at birth, Rowbarge spends most of his life struggling under the burden of his unknown loss. Babbitt identified Herbert Rowbarge as her personal favorite among her books. Light shelfwear, minor waterspotting to textblock top, and a couple of minor spots of soiling to front endpaper. In a price-clipped jacket showing moderate rubbing. A very good plus copy in like jacket of this elegantly written short novel, something of an outlier in the oeuvre of a writer best known for Tuck Everlasting and her other young-adult novels. An exemplary work of prose, uncommon signed.

Our research has been unable to determine whether "Deem" was indeed a nickname of Mrs. Thompson, or whether Ripley made a mistake that Richardson then repeated.
