An excellent copy of this unusual study of the novels of the famous 19th century neurologist/psychiatrist noted for his 'rest cure'. Fine. 12.5 cm x 20 Cm. t.p.+14 (Burton's latin dedicatory letter to'Reverendo viro Johanni Mather'+79 (translations of scriptural passages in Greek -pp.1, 43-50, Latin - pp.2-43, and English 51-79), no endpapers, an excellent clean, tight and unmarked text-block; clean and attractive modern marbled card covers with typed spine title 'Oxford Delectus 1736' , nearly unworn but a trifle rubbed to front joint and top spine. Apparent;ly very scarce anthology of anonymous student translation exercises set at Corpus Christi College, Oxford during the long Summer vacation.

Fair. 8.5 Cms x 13.5 Cms. dedication+f/piece (engr.More portrait) , t.p.with enr.central ill.+200, uncut edges; fr.gutter gone leaving covers hanging from back, prev.owner's gilt label top fr.pastedown, what is curious though is that t.p. has the name 'James Esdaile' very neatly inscribed in outer margin, internally otherwise clean, tight & unmarked ;covers quite clean but fr.joint and top chipped, while only fixed along back joint as mentioned before. One obviously thinks it highly likely that this was the copy owned by Esdaile (1808-1859), later famous for using mesmerism/hypnosis for surgical anaesthetic purposes while in India, who would have been 11 when it was published and whose father was a church minister.

Internally otehrwise clean, tight & unmarked but occasional browning/foxing to area round lower outer corner, early marbled endpapers, browning/ mottling to non-marbled sides of endpapers, sm. outer edge-nicks fr.fly & endpaper. There is some inner adhesion between end fly & endpaper- in fact it is unclear whether they may have originally been completely pasted together and only later become nearly separated as they are preceded by another blank leaf, the same is true of fr. endpaper and succeeding leaf. VG+ for Age/No Jacket (none issued). 12 Cms x 17.5 Cms. 53 pp., black endpoapers; virtually pristine internally being clean, tight and quite unmarked; covers clean, bright and minimally worn but patchy pigment loss to spine, spine region and thin strips along most edges, a little more extensive to back, at first glance most of this looks liked sun-fading, Despite numerous reprints from 1867 onwards, with a 'New edition' in 1890, this is surprisingly scarce, and the 1894 edition 'with corrections' and its 1896 reprint seem even more so. This is the last edition I assume as Myers died in January 1901. Myers best known as co-founder of the Society for Psychical Research, author of 2-vol. 'Phantasms of the Living' and the posthumously compiled Human Personality and Its Survival of Bodily Death'. This religious poem was his first book.
