First edition thus, limited to 980 numbered copies. (Heller & Magee no.112; Angelo Biblio. p.43). This book was picked as one of the 50 best designed books of the year by the AIGA in 1928. When George Macy, the founder of the Limited Editions Club, saw this book in Bennett Cerf's office, he vowed that he would hire Valenti Angelo to create such a beautiful book for his Club. Tall 8vo., original quarter leather over cloth. (viii), 362, (2) pages. Near fine with slight rubbing at the head and tail of the spine.

Printed by Michael and Winifred Bixler. Illustrated by the great French-Polish artist Balthus. Rilke was a childhood friend of Balthus, who did these watercolors as a tribute to Rilke. Keiji Shinohara reproduced the illustrations as multi-colored woodcuts. One of an edition limited to 300 numbered copies, signed by the artist.

Printed in Romanee type on Rives BFK paper by Bradley Hutchinson, Nancy Ruppert, Elaine Smyth, and Tom Taylor. Number 54 of an edition limited to 150 copies. Fine in fine slipcase with the original glassine sheets.

One of an edition limited to 300 numbered copies signed by the illustrator, Phoebe Beasley and Maya Angelou, who wrote the introduction. Illustrated with seven colorful silk screens from the original collages by Beasley. Poems selected by Angelou. She writes: "A terrain furnished with poetry and paintings is so felicitous and nourishing to the spirit that an observer is beckoned onto that landscape and made to feel home...he is my poet."
