With 206 mounted gelatin silver photographs from ca. 8,5x14 cm (3 ¼ x 5 ½ in) to ca. 6,5x10,5 cm (2 ½ x 4 ¼ in). Most photos with period white ink notes in English on the mounts (the captions relate either to individual photos or groups of photos). Period decorative cloth album fastened with a string; gilt-lettered title “Photographs” on the front board. One album leaf removed from the stub and loosely inserted, five or six photos were previously removed from the album, but overall a very good collection of interesting photos. Four Oblong Folio albums (ca. 23x32,5 cm). Each with eight card stock leaves. In all 254 gelatin silver photographs mounted in windows, each ca. 8x10,5 cm (3 x 4 ¼ in) or slightly smaller. Over seventy photos captioned in pencil on verso; many also dated 1908-1910. One album with a period paper leaf with the typewritten list of captions to all photos in that album. Four period grey card albums fastened with ribbons. With a notebook ca. 29x22,5 cm (11 ¼ x 8 ¾ in); 59 leaves are filled in manuscript on rectos (35 leaves of carbon copies and 24 leaves of originals, supplemented with carbon copies). The watercolour shows Pachacamac looking northeast towards the Andes. The site was settled before the Inca conquest and dedicated to the “Earth Maker” creator god Pacha Kamaq. In the letter, one “Claude” shares news about her brother’s poor health, talking about his inability to leave the room or continue working as a teacher. She also mentions sending him a Christmas cake and writes about "Charlie's wife " being unhappy with his stay at their house. Fold marks, slightly age-toned, tear on the last page, but overall a very good letter, written in a legible hand.An early, historically interesting California letter by a salesman from “Beach’s Fruit Store” in Marysville (inc. 1851), Yuba County. The author likely moved to California in the mid-1850s, and after several years in San Francisco, settled in Marysville in 1859.The author writes to “Dear Sister Sarah” (apparently a teacher) and talks about the upcoming city elections, California’s rich agriculture, his exceptional cooking skills (“I can beat any of the girls cooking”), and weekly attendance at the Presbyterian church. A minor crack on the leaf’s top point, paper slightly age-toned, but overall a beautiful drawing in very good condition.Attractive unusual 19th-century gouache drawing of Napoleon’s first tomb on Saint Helena Island. The ex-Emperor spent there his last years in exile (1816-1821) and died in his residence, the Longwood House, on May 5, 1821. He was first buried in the Valley of the Willows near the Longwood House with full military honours for the rank of general. “The tomb was temporarily covered with a slab.
