Influenced by Western mystery writers like Edgar Allan Poe (his nom de plume is a phonetic approximation of 'The Raven' author's name), Rampo was censored during the leadup to World War II by the Japanese government for his story, 'The Caterpillar', which tells of a veteran's appalling disfigurement. This edition, with its hard-to-find cover featuring a drawing by Masakazu Kuwata, was translated orally by Rampo reading each sentence to Harris, who could speak but not read Japanese. 222 pp. Fiction.

Taking a cue from Dante's Purgatorio, Jazz is considered by many to be Morrison's most difficult novel and, according to the author, embodies 'the modernity that jazz anticipated and directed, and . . . its unreasonable optimism.' Its iconic first line—'Sth, I know that woman.'—came almost unconsciously from a long-fought battle to find the voice of the book's narrator, as Morrison registered her own frustration in what Morgan Parker calls 'a self-disgusted tooth-suck and petty pencil toss.' Morrison herself recreates that tooth-suck on the audiocassette, which features packaging adapted from R. D. Scudellari's first edition design by Robert Anthony.

Includes an intro by theater critic John Lahr, who was the the son of a Ziegfeld girl and Cowardly Lion actor Bert Lahr (In addition to extensive biographizing of Tennessee Williams, the critic penned a New Yorker article about his mother, Millie Schroeder, and a book about his father). Lahr co-produced Prick Up Your Ears, a movie adaptation of his 1978 book recounting Orton's antic-filled but profoundly doomed relationship with Kenneth Halliwell (Wallace Shawn plays Lahr in the film). After the couple's murder-suicide, Orton and Halliwell, whose vandalized library book covers are held at London's Islington Museum, were both cremated and their ashes mixed and scattered in an unmarked corner of the gardens at Golders Green Mausoleum. 354 pp.

Ford, who was known for his big-sky cinematography and dearth of close-ups, had two contrasting landscape photos hanging in his office and reportedly told a young Steven Speilberg, 'When you know why the horizon goes at the top of the frame or the bottom of the frame, then you're a director,' before throwing him out of his office. Despite his gruff reputation (When Jean-Luc Godard asked him what brought him to Hollywood, he replied, 'A train'), his lengthy interviews with Bogdanovich compiled here go much more smoothly, and the New Hollywood director also pens two essays about Ford, included along with a descriptive filmography. Set in 1665 as the bubonic plague swept through London, the book was written by Defoe, possibly under pay of the British government, as a warning that history could soon repeat itself. 240 pp.
