Hungarian boat-builder Máté, who wrote the classic sailboat construction manual, From a Bare Hull, documents an international array of houseboats here, from Amsterdam canals to the San Francisco Bay, about which he writes, 'The romance is in a masterpiece of design that juts from the water like an angry grey rock and has inside a greenhouse and oak floors with round brass plugs instead of nails, and a desk suspended by brass rods with brass turnbuckles for adjustment, and light pouring in everywhere from decks and skylights and water-level windows.' Máté would later ride the millennial wave of Tuscaniana by writing three philosophically minded books, starting with the 1999 bestseller, The Hills of Tuscany, about his experience establishing and maintaining a vineyard with his wife, painter Candace Máté, who also designed this book.

Black Sparrow Press began posthumously publishing Fante's then out-of-print works in the late 1970s, at the suggestion of house favorite Charles Bukowski ('Fante was my god,' he said), who had happened upon the writer's work in the LA Public Library. West of Rome includes two novellas, The Orgy and My Dog Stupid, which Yvan Attal adapted into a 2019 film, Mon chien Stupide. Avant-garde journalist Bryan founded the 1960s Los Angeles underground newspaper, Open City, noted for its Charles Bukowski column, 'Notes of a Dirty Old Man' (Bukowski would later satirize the publication's history in his short story, 'The Birth, Life and Death of an Underground Newspaper'). This irreverent retelling of Leary's exploits features a copyright page actually identifying the book as the '201st issue' of Open City, and its foreword emphasizes the complex cultural role the drug guru played, acknowledging his 'brilliant ideas' while adding that 'nothing he's done is any terrible surprise.' 296 pp (plus photo appendix).
