London: Constable & Company, 1913. Small octavo, 119 pages, including glossary. Bound in original black cloth with gilt vignette on the cover of a piper in full regailia. Gilt spine titles and top edge gilt. A charming collection of poems, many originally published in newspapers and journals. Nice introduction by Andrew Lang. A fine little volume for homesick Scots..by birth or learned affection. "Here on the Rand we freely grant We're blest wi' sunny weather; Fae cauld an' snaw we're weel awa, But man we miss the heather" Written in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Pall-Mall: Shakespeare Head Press, 1825. This is a facsimile of the quarto edition of the first printing of Hamlet. A note explains it is an accurate reprint from the only known copy of this tragedy as originally written by Shakespeare, which he afterwards altered and enlarged. Bound in early, probably original, half leather and textured cloth with gilt titling and decorations. The binding is heavily worn and stained but the text is clean and bright. Pencilled notes on final blank leaf. Laid in are 14 portraits of Shakespeare, mostly engravings taken from other books. A scarce item and of interest to the scholar in that there are textual differences and variations in the plot as compared to the received text.

University of London Press, London, 1936 Small quarto bound in original brick-colored cloth with gilt titles on the upper cover and spine, 272 pages. This exceptional reference work on the Art and Craft of metalwork is illustrated with 76 plates, including many fine photographs of finely produced objects. The book is quite rare and particularly in this state of preservation. It was once the property of the High School for Boys in Hereford, England and bears their ownership stamp on the title page, rear endpaper and a couple of margins..no circulating library stamps or marks on the binding or contents. Aside from a dime size spot of fading on the back cover and a trace of wrinkling to the top of the free endpaper, this is a fine copy indeed of an elusive title.

Boston, Massachusettes: Hale, Cushman and Flint, 1929. First edition 12mo, 7" x 4 1/4". Bound in original black cloth with paper spine label. Save for a owner's inscription, (name and date), on the front free endpaper, this is a fine copy in original pictorial dust wrapper which although chipped and soiled, is complete. The repeating pattern of a man hanging from a scaffold in silhouette is used on the endpapers and spine label. Published the year after the more common British first edition. Surely this small book, with its keenly provocative perspective on the subject of capital punishment, stirred the winds of controversy amongst an American public still struggling with this issue.

!929. No publisher listed, Riverside, California. A scarce booklet of 70 pages detailing the history of the Glenwood Mission Inn in Riverside, California. Original pictorial wrappers, stapled. Chipped and worn along edges, old tape stain to upper right corner of front cover but still a decent copy of a scarce ephemeral item.

London: Gresham, 1914. First edition Oblong 4to. bound in original sage green cloth. A scarce set of reference books based upon Arts and Crafts philosophy and design. Although intended for students formally training in handicraft, the volumes offer excellent discussions and illustrations for anyone interested in the period. Illustrated throughout in black and white, with some colour. Volume I: Easy Handwork for Infants, Raffia Work, Educational Handwork, Stencilling'- pp x, 228. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1887. Green cloth octavo, 287 pp., including index plus 24pp publisher's catalogue bound in at the back. A near fine copy of a fascinating and useful English garden book illustrated with eight marvelous folding plates or garden designs. This copy was a review copy with a small, discreet impression stamp "With The Publisher's Compliments" on the title page. For the sentimental gardener..an old leaf is pressed between pp. 190 and 191..the chapter on Wallflowers.

London: Bradbury, Agnew & Co., (circa 1880). Thirteen volumes, 24 mo. bound in emerald green cloth.Edges stained purple. A charming little set with the original box. The box is worn and the top and bottom are detached but present. It is a pleasure to find a set of Shakespeare retaining the gift box in any condition. Aside from a few loose pages, all thirteen volumes are in lovely condition.

Mainz: Jos. Scholz, (ca. 1900 ). Oblong quarto bound in pictorial cloth-backed paper over boards. This is book number 9 in a series of illustrated books published by Scholz in Mainz, Germany. A bit of soiling on the lower cover, else a near fine copy. The books were identical in format with several artists contributing color illustrations. They are all lovely examples of exceptional graphic designs associated with the period. Each repeats a marvelous title page illustration, ornamental border on the last page and endleaves, all overtly Art Nouveau in style. This title illustrated by Hans Schroedter.

London: Gresham, ( Ca. 1902). Octavo, 395 pp., bound in cobalt blue cloth with Talwin Morris's "feather design" . The design, consisting of sinuous white lines and ornamental devices resembling the "eyes" of peacock feathers, with green centers, was done for Gresham Publishers. The firm, a subsidiary of Blackie, was established to produce deluxe subscription editions which were not available from general booksellers. Many of Morris's best designs were published under this imprint. Two owners inscriptions on the front free endpaper, one dated 2.10.02, the other undated. Minor edgewear and foxing, remaining a very good copy of an attractive Glasgow Style binding.

New York: The Nourse Company, 1913. First edition Bound in original stiff tan paper with pictorial cover design in dark brown and terra cotta. The corner of the front cover is chipped and the corners of the first few pages creased. A couple of closed tears along the edges. Aside from these relatively minor faults, this is an exceptional copy of a Prang water color book, internally fine and unmarked. The back cover gives suggestions on the use of water color paints. A fragile item in a remarkable state of preservation.

Concord N.H.: G. F. Bemis, 1835. First edition, first state with signature mark 3 absent. Bound with the ORIGINAL BLUE WRAPPERS present. Recent cloth backed marble boards, uncut as issued. Scattered foxing throughout, several leaves with slight tears to fore edge, wrappers archivally backed but still a nice copy of Emerson's first separately published book or substantial publication preceded only by contributions to journals and a broadside. The rarity of this pamphlet can be explained by the small number of copies and the fire in the town clerk's office that destroyed many of them. Quite scarce in any condition but especially so with the wrappers as most copies were rebound and the wrappers discarded, losing printed elements important to scholars and collectors. Two elusive pieces of paper, being to Mr. Emerson's Discourse what dust wrappers are to modern first editions.

East Aurora, N. Y.: The Roycrofters, (1912). This is a beautiful copy of an early edition bound in the original embossed leather binding with elaborate blind stamped panels of flowers and vines. It is an octavo of 157 pages, decorated with head and tail pieces in black and white. Portrait of Hubbard tipped in as frontispiece with facsimile signature below. Aside from a bit of fading to the spine and the slightest edge-wear this is a clean unworn copy.

Lighting Education Committee, 1924 A twenty-four page catalog in original pictorial wrappers. Oblong, about 7in x 10 in. Fully illustrated in black and white and half-tone illustrations of interior rooms, fixtures, doorways etc. The text outlines what lighting is needed for which tasks and rooms. The first page outlines a contest for children to study the book, investigate their home and lighting, cut pictures out of the fixtures and place them in the rooms illustrated in the catalog. Additionally write an essay of no more than 600 words. This copy is very good with just a couple of creases to the front cover. (nothing has been cut out!) and is clean and unmarked.

The back cover is a full page advertisement for the firm of Roger Dawson, 1 Berners Street, Oxford. Containing 224pp. plus illustrated ads. Colour frontispiece of "Evenlode", a William Morris design for chintz. A welath of black and white and half tone drawings and photographic reproductions of every element required to furnish and decorate an Arts and Crafts period home. This rare reference book discusses the elements of modern home decor in detail as well as offering some historical perspective on antique furniture. The products and designs offered include the work of some of the most noted artists, craftsmen and firms of the day, including William Morris, C. R. Ashbee, E. L. Luytens and E. A. Taylor. Random House, New York, (1950) STATED FIRST PRINTING. Gray cloth over boards in dust wrapper. Price unclipped ($2.75). A few trifling chips of the dust wrapper but an absolutely stunning copy of Goyen's first novel. The wrapper has no fading or scuffs as is usual with the dark blue paper. The book is fine with no wear or marks.

London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1907. A square 16mo. bound in forest green cloth with striking Art Nouveau cover with entwined Tudor roses, stems and foliage encirling the title..spine with small Tudor roses, hearts and pointielles. Top edge gilt. A trace of fading to the spine and browning to endleaves, else a fine copy of the second edition, the first having been published in 1906. Printed on fine paper, this elegant, slim book of 88 pages, offers inspiration to anyone that appreciates the warmth of cottage home fires, inglenooks, gardens and walks in the village green.

London: George Newnes, 1906. First printing. Large quarto of 247 pages plus color frontispiece. Sixteen color plates with tissue guards and scores of black and white line drawings of floor plans and elevations and ornamental headpieces. Bound in the original olive green cloth, top edge gilt with endleaves of a charming stylized floral pattern printed in purple and olive green, two favorite color choices of Scott. Gift inscription on the verso of the title page from prominent colonial revival architect, Frank A. Bourne dated 1910. (Bourne was the author of the book "Architectural Drawing and Lettering".) The gilt on the cover is a bit rubbed but still bright. Light edgewear, else both binding and text in exceptional condition. A near fine copy. (Very Heavy Book. Extra Postage Required)

London and New York: Macmillan and Co., 1893. An octavo, 236 pp., bound in original forest green cloth with delightful cover and spine designs in gilt. All edges gilt. Illustrated with one hundred and thirty illustrations from pen drawings by Charles E. Brock. This is the first edition of one of the titles in the highly desirable Cranford series published by Macmillan and imitated by several other publishers of the day. Aside from some minor rubbing and foxing this is a fine copy of a handsome book and a nice example of a publisher's trade binding. Rogerson 9.
