Lincoln, Nebraska: (1927). Oblong folio, (14.5" by 10.5") 221 pages, bound in a scrap-book style similar to large fabric and wallpaper sample books. Maroon cloth over boards held together with brass screws. Trade catalogs of American furniture are far more difficult to find than house plans. It is most unusual to find one of this size, with this range of items. Obviously intended to be used as a sample book by a retail establishment, rather than as a promotional mailer to individuals. The book is organized in seven sections, each with a heavy card cover sheet listing the category and page numbers of the section with printed tabs for easy reference. One of the tabs lists "Congoleum" but there is no material about the floor covering included and the page number has been left blank, indicating that part of the catalog had yet to be printed, rather than removed. Harper & Brothers, New York and London, 1924 Octavo, bound in original slate gray cloth with gilt titles, 294 pp., including index. Top edge stained yellow. Stated first edition in the RARE ORIGINAL DUST WRAPPER. Offsetting from old moisture damage, evidenced by a white residue mark running the width of the rear cover, approximately one inch from the top edge. The damage mirrors a stain on the wrapper's rear panel and spine. The stain, while noticeable, is less detracting than one might expect, not affecting the spine of the book itself, that is otherwise fine and bright. There is other minor soiling and wear to the dust wrapper, but it is unfaded and complete, lettered in navy blue against a pale turquoise ground. '"Price $4.00" is printed on the inner flap along with a list of Harper publications on psychology and psychoanalysis. E. P. Dutton and Co. New York, 1934 FIRST EDITION. An octavo bound in the original sand colored cloth with brown decoration and lettering. The book is clean and tight but does have the darkened spine and toned end papers so common with this edition. Large, but nice book plate stamp on front endpaper otherwise the text unmarked. The wrapper has soiling, wear and some light staining but is overall presentable.

B. T. Batsford, London 1899. Original blue cloth with gilt titling and decoration. 136 pages plus index and ads. A classic work covering decorative styles in applied art throughout history. Many countries and styles covered including Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Persian, Scandinavian, Norman, Celtic etc. Profusely illustrated with black and white drawings in 43 full plates and many textual illustrations. One corner very lightly bumped, page edges foxed as well as prelims, cloth clean and unworn. Overall a very good copy and a must have for any student of decorative design.

This short booklet is an offprint from the Harvard Library Bulletin, Vol I, No. 1 from Winter 1947. It was written by Ethel Burnet Clark the first librarian of Dumbarton Oaks and is inscribed by her on the original wrappers. "To the Director of Dumbarton Oaks the Hon. Keeper of Rare Books" Clark was Keeper of Rare Books at Dumbarton from 1940-1944. She only surrendered her position because she had reached the age at which Harvard required retirement. Nonetheless, Clark was able to remain at Dumbarton Oaks after her official "retirement," under the title: "Keeper of Rare Books, Emerita." In this capacity, Clark continued her work at Dumbarton Oaks and received a small monthly pension in addition to living quarters at the Acorn House, a small cottage on the Dumbarton Oaks property. Later, in the 1960s, she also helped catalog the Mary Mellon collection of books and manuscripts on alchemy and the occult, which Paul Mellon then gave to Yale University. Frederick A. Stokes, New York, 1916 An octavo bound in original red cloth, top edges gilt, gilt pictorial cover illustration. Twelve tipped-in illustrations in color by Charles Robinson, with captioned tissue guards. (Lacking tissue guard at page 66 and marginal closed tears on the tissue guard at page 80) Many textual illustrations and pictorial endpapers, all by Robinson. Aside from the fault with two of the tissue guards and a bit of wear at the corners, this is a near fine copy of the First American Edition.

Mainz: Jos. Scholz, (ca. 1900 ). Oblong quarto bound in pictorial cloth-backed paper over boards. This is book number 2 in a series of illustrated books published by Scholz in Mainz, Germany. A bit of light wear, including the text block pulling away from the staples, else a very good copy. The books were identical in format with several artists contributing color illustrations. All of the books repeat a marvelous title page illustration, an ornamental border on the last page and endleaves, all overtly Art Nouveau in style. They are all lovely examples of period graphic design. This title is one of the most desirable in the series, due to the illustrations of Lefler and Urban, two of the leading artists of the Jugendstihl movement in Vienna.

VOLUME 3 ONLY. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1935. First American Edition with the Scribner's "A". Bound in the original green fine textured cloth with gilt spine lettering and rules. The book is fine with no wear to the cloth, text bright and unmarked. The dust wrapper is heavily chipped with loss of text on spine, heavily worn but complete.

London: J. M. Dent, 1909. A charming book of nature with 12 coloured plates and many black and white illustrations. Grasses, flowers, birds and butterflies are discussed and pictured in a slim decorative volume, 86 pp., plus 8 pp. publisher's catalogue of nature and outdoor books. Gray-green pictorial cloth, gilt titles. A bit of light edgewear, endleaves browned. A very good copy of an attractive and useful companion for a walk in the meadow.

London: Wells Gardner, Darton & Co., (1886). First edition Square octavo of decorated gray cloth with yellow and red cover lettering and black pictorial decorations. 64 pages profusely illustrated and each page decorated in red and black border design in the style of the Aesthetic movement. Light brown coated endpapers with faded inscription dated "X-mas 1885". The binding is near fine with a scant bit of cover soil, extremities ever so lightly rubbed. A beautiful copy of an interesting, scarce title.

London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1924. Folio. Bound in linen-backed paper over boards, this is a very nice copy of "The Player's Shakespeare", printed at the Shakespeare Head Press in Stratford-upon-Avon. This edition is limited to 450 copies printed on rag paper, of which this is Number 426. "Newly Printed from the First Folio of 1623", the book employs a very fine selection of artists in its production. The line blocks are by Emery Walker, the illustrations by Paul Nash, printed under the direction of B. H. Newdigate and the art-editorship of Albert Rutherston. There are five delicately colored plates representing the " Costumes for some of the Characters." Aside from evidence of bookplate removal from the front pastedown, (not overly distracting) and moderate edgewear, this is a very pleasing copy of a handsome edition of one of the Bard's most beloved plays.

New York, Chicago, San Francisco: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, (1974). First edition Octavo. A fine copy bound in black cloth, with price-clipped dust wrapper. Gift inscription in ink on front free endpaper. Edward Abbey said of Nichols' third novel, "a bellyful of a story--very funny, easy-going and sharp as a taco."

Norfolk, Connecticut: New Directions, (1942). 8vo. Original gray wrappers with the simple drawing by Matisse on the cover. A near fine copy of one of the Poets of the Month booklets nicely printed with the text in both French and English.

New York: Ivan Obolensky, (1963). Octavo. Bound in yellow cloth, fresh and appealing. Previous owner's name and date on front free endpaper. In dust wrapper with moderate soiling and a few chips at the extremities, still complete, unclipped and bright. A pleasing copy of this fine collection of short stories by a master in the genre.

A small octavo bound in the original textured blue paper cover boards (hardback) with gilt titling. The book is fine save for a penciled name and date on the front free endpaper. A "to the reader" note from the author is on the front endpaper with a space for the owners name and a date. The previous owner has filled in his name in pencil and the date 23 AD. Illustrated with many color photographs and drawings. The original dust jacket has the price unclipped, $6.00, and is complete with slight edge wear and soiling but the colors still bright.

BUNGALOW HOMES TRADE CATALOG. Los Angeles Investment Co. 1913 Extremely scarce trade catalog of home designs for California. Oblong, octavo in pictorial color wrappers. Stated, Twelfth Bungalow Book Edition, 1913. This is a well used copy but complete. Creased, well thumbed, stray pencil marks, light scribblings, some pages soiled, two signatures on the title page but wonderful. 92 pages with an illustration of each house, apparently as built with an accompanying floor plan with measurements. Many interior shots as well. Virtually all are Arts and Crafts bungalow style homes that fill so many streets in the L. A. area. Indispensable to the restoration architect, a modern builder or just a small house enthusiast.

New York: The Architectural Book Publishing Co., 1923. First edition Folio, 212 pages, bound in original blue cloth with gilt spine titles. A most impressive study of the architectural firm of Mellor, Meigs & Howe, with photographic images as well as architectural drawings of some of their most important commissions. The preface was written by Owen Wister in praise of the mission of the architects of this prestigious concern to allow "life to determine the character of a building". This particular volume is concerned primarily with residential and farm buildings displaying the firm's dedication to standing against the commercialization of art and architecture by applying the deepest philosophical and aesthetic elements of the Arts and Crafts movement. Indeed, the influence of the British architectural principles seen in the work of Bailey Scott, Philip Webb and others is in keen evidence.
