England, 1851. Both sheets trimmed at top and lower edge with slight loss of text; otherwise in excellent condition. Broadside, halved at central rule to form two sheets measuring 330 x 255 mm. & 330 x 260 mm., illustrated with four dramatic woodcut scenes. Rare and significant broadside advertising a panoramic lecture show on the Australian colonies that toured England in 1850 and 1851. The panoramic spectacle and accompanying lecture were the work of James Brice (fl. 1840s), a sometime South Australian resident who returned to England to promote emigration and investment with this novel and spectacular moving panorama, painted by the artists of the Polytechnic Institute of London. And what a spectacle it must have been! The detailed notes on this broadside describe some eighty scenes covering 6,500 feet of material, illustrating the social landscape of Australia in the mid nineteenth-century. Brice clearly sought to satisfy public interest in the Aboriginal peoples - the broadside lists at least… Leer más

[New Bedford], 1880. Slight wear to top and base of spine, internally very good. Oblong folder, containing the series of 22 cabinet photographs of paintings; the albumen photographs each measuring approx. 100 x 175 mm mounted on card to form a concertina; printed captions mounted below each image; original brown cloth. Evidently very rare: this is one of the earliest recorded photographically illustrated exhibition catalogues. It was published to accompany the 1880 display of a remarkable suite of 22 paintings of the Niger's four-year whaling voyage. Raleigh, a retired seaman, was a "fancy painter of carriages and house interiors" as well as a sign and boat painter in New Bedford, when he took up a second career as a painter of maritime art. The photographs here are of his series of oil paintings, each measuring six by eleven feet, which were designed to form a vast discontinuous panorama of a whaling voyage. Some seventeen of the paintings are held today in the New Bedford Whaling Museum, and… Leer más

Paris, 1824. Handcoloured engraved portrait, 32 x 24 cm. (plate size), margins trimmed, a few light spots yet very good. A fine portrait of the Tasmanian Parabéri by Nicolas-Martin Petit, published for the second edition of the official voyage account. The two ships of the expedition had anchored in d'Entrecasteaux Channel on 13 January 1802 after two months at sea; Frank Horner has called the time that followed 'two of the most productive months the expedition was to enjoy' (The French Reconnaissance, p. 191). Their easy and friendly relations with the aboriginal tribes of the region had brought great satisfaction to the French, and they maintained a good rapport throughout their stay. Petit, in particular, was very busy with his sketch book, and his series of portraits and scenes are among the most sensitive portrayals of Tasmanian aborigines - in fact, together with the handful of portraits in the official account of Cook's third voyage, these portraits are the earliest major study of the Tasmanians. . Paris: Libraires du Palais-Royal, 1860. Duodecimo, uncut; original blue paper wrappers, manuscript inscription on front cover. First edition: a proposal for a 'new utopia' founded on pacifist principles. In 1859, a Franco-Italian alliance had sought to repel Austrian aggression in northern Italy, but the French people had been sickened by the losses, and Napoleon III had hastily signed an armistice. It is in this moment of anti-war sentiment that Paris Moderne is situated. Whilst the author proudly claims to have served forty years in the army, this is an essentially pacifist plea in which both the political goals and the heavy loss of life are brought into question in a movement which anticipates the role of war in a mechanized society. That is, battles are reduced to the tragic mathematics of attrition so familiar from later conflicts: in the case of the battle of Eylau, four thousand French in return for six to eight thousand Austrian. His fear is that this culture of war has become so engrained… Leer más

Portraits of two natives of King George's Sound, Western Australia, published in Prichard's The Natural History of Man. James Cowles Prichard (1786-1848) spent several decades amassing pictorial information to support his theory that all of the world's inhabitants shared a common ancestry and were originally dark skinned. His Natural History of Man contained portraits of the various human races drawn from published voyage and expedition accounts, and was an important foundation for modern ethnological science .

Descripción:
Melbourne: John Ferres, Government Printer, 1858. Folio, single leaf, printed on blue paper; disbound. Petition highlighting the miseries and privations of the miners at the new township of Mount Ararat in Victoria, and asking that every miner be allowed to occupy and cultivate an acre of Crown Land. Ararat was first settled by Europeans in the 1840s after the surveyor Thomas Mitchell passed through the area in 1836. It was in 1857 that a group of Chinese miners en route to Central Victoria struck gold at the Canton Lead, making it the only city in Australia to be founded by the Chinese. This petition, then, dates from the very beginnings of the development of Ararat, and deals particularly with the poor diet of the miners ('the impossibility of obtaining a proper quantity of vegetable food'), but also highlights the relative poverty of the small society at Mount Ararat, where 'profits are too frequently the price of virtue.' .

Paris: chez Saintin, Libraire de S.M. l'Imperatrice, 1813. A little foxing, light water stain to preliminaries of the second volume, yet a very good set.. Two volumes, square duodecimo, with a total of 32 plates including the frontispieces; recent marbled boards. Scarce ethnological handbook with beautifully engraved plates depicting the native peoples of the Pacific, New Holland and the Americas. As the title suggests, the work concentrates on many of the exotic and relatively recently discovered lands, and includes one section, with accompanying plate, dedicated to the Australian Aborigines. The work is known for the interest and diversity of its subjects, with sections, to name a few, on Java, Siam, the Iroquois, and the Hottentots. There are also many peoples from the Pacific noticed, including the inhabitants of Kamchatka, the Moluccas, Tahiti, and California. There is a particularly good section on New Holland, which takes notice of the discoveries of Captain Cook on the east coast, and the… Leer más

London: Scott, Webster & Geary, 1837. Binding lightly rubbed, very good overall.. Duodecimo, frontispiece and engraved title-page; contemporary roan with gilt to spine and boards. An attractive fore-edge painting based upon the famous Sydney Cove view engraved by Edward Dayes. This image, transmitted through various forms (from oil on canvas to engraving to fore-edge painting) is believed to be the work of convict artist Thomas Watling. Engravings by Dayes after originals by Watling feature in the First Fleet accounts of Collins and Hunter, and are now iconic Australiana images. The present for-edge rendition is skilfully executed, painted under the gilding and only to be revealed only when the pages are gently fanned. An old clipping from a booksellers catalogue advertising this book (circa 1930) notes the Sydney view, and the pastedown bears the bookplate of New Zealand book collector and art critic E. C. Simpson. William Smellie (1740-1795) was the editor of the first edition of the Encyclopedia… Leer más

London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company, 1880. Blank margins neatly trimmed, else fine.. Carte de visite measuring 94 x 60 mm, Fine carte de visite portrait of Professor Thomas Huxley, one of the pre-eminent naturalists of Victorian England who championed the evolutionary theory propounded by Charles Darwin throughout his professional career. Huxley is also an important figure in Australian natural history as he accompanied the government biologist John Macgillivray aboard the Rattlesnake scientific survey of 1846-50. This expedition, under the command of Captain Owen Stanley, travelled north along the coast of north Queensland and through the Barrier Reef before exploring coastal New Guinea and the Louisiade archipelago. During his time in Australian waters Huxley speculated on concepts related to biology and evolution, so much so that he became a staunch advocate and defender of Darwin upon returning to Britain. .

Paris: Dépôt Général de la Marine, 1811. Blank margin slightly chipped.. Engraved chart measuring 700 x 1023 mm., excellent condition. Fine large separately issued map of the city and harbour of Cadiz, prepared by the French navy during the Peninsular War. This map was issued by the Dépôt Général de la Marine, the French equivalent of the Admiralty. An island naval fortress, Cadiz was a crucial British bastion during the Peninsular War. Joseph Bonaparte, whilst in overall command of French forces in Spain, overlooked its capture when the French were still winning victories against Spanish armies. This proved a major oversight because Cadiz made an admirable base and resupply point for British forces under Wellington. British supply ships could come and go at will. When the French belatedly realised its strategic importance, they attempted to besiege the site with some 20,000 men but the British garrison held out without much difficulty against the French attackers who were under-supplied and… Leer más

The lower portion of the sheet is decorated with a tranquil vista of shipping in the bay against the backdrop of Table Mountain. The map was printed in London by the younger William Day (1823-1906), lithographer by appointment to Queen Victoria. Day is remembered as an innovative publisher who offered interesting maps including the North Atlantic ice fields, telegraphic lines of Europe and steamship routes between Europe and America. London: Robinson, 1798. Somewhat darkened at central fold.. Engraved map, 410 x 510 mm; with original central fold. Fine and very detailed chart of Bucareli Sound in Alaska, prepared for the publication of La Pérouse's voyage, here in the English version. The engraving acknowledges its derivation from the mapping by Maurelle and Quadra on the Spanish expeditions of 1775 and 1779. The sound was named for New Spain's Viceroy - for some time it was thought to offer an entrance to the Northwest passage, which is why it was included in the publication of La Pérouse's voyage. Bucarelli Sound is located about 50 miles west of Ketchikan. The chart shows many soundings around the harbor shoreline, and locates Golfo De Esquibel, Is. De St. Fernando, Is. St. Juan Baptista and Puerto de la Real Marina, also showing points and bays, channels and many small islands. .

London: John Harris, 1832. Engraved map, 315 x 432 mm. (image size), original hand-colouring. An attractive children's educational map of the World The map is based on the work of the Abbé Gaultier, an educationalist originally from Piedmont, who had settled in France in 1780 and later fled the revolution to London. Gaultier began publishing his works in the late eighteenth century, and his philosophy of teaching geographical knowledge through games was very influential for game-makers and educational publishers on the continent and in England. He died in 1818 but his Geography continued to be reprinted. In 1815 it was "collated with the author's last Paris edition by Jehoshaphat Aspin", a cartographer. (see Juliana Bayfield, 'Games of Virtue and Learning', The La Trobe Journal, 1997). Aspin seems to have produced the first edition of this work in 1821. Aspin's versions of the maps evidently had some success as an entertainment and teaching aid. They were originally issued as a portfolio or atlas,… Leer más
