Engraving by Carlo Raimondi signed "Raimondi incise" and based upon an eighteenth-century miniature attributed as possibly the work of Jean Baptiste Weyler or Jacques Thouron. "In one portrait of Franklin, painted when peace was in the making and his long struggle nearly over, the artist has caught in pose and features the emotions of victory, the pride and triumph of the hour. Franklin may have assumed this pose and expression for a moment, although it is inconceivable that he would have held them, even briefly, for an artist. The body is to the front, the head and eyes looking sharply to the right. The hair seems tossed by a sudden motion of the head. Lettered around the top and bottom of the oval portrait are the words: "No. V] Massachusetts Magazine [Vol. II." [AND:] "Eripuit cælo flume; sceptrumque Tyrannis." ["He snatched the lightning from heaven, and the sceptre from tyrants."] Based upon the portrait made by the royal Manufacture Nationale at Sèvres between 1778 to 1779. A rare Chambersburg, Pennsylvania imprint of which OCLC returns just one copy. Published by the students of Marshall College, their commencement address by the school's president.

Scarce volume of self-published poetry by a retired schoolteacher and native of Sandy Creek, New York who removed to a farm in Gilboa, New York and became the Town historian. "It is her farm experience, her love of the country and its people, their legends, hard lives, courage, and fortitude that form the basis of many of her poems" - from the book's advertisement circular, inscribed and autographed by the author, laid in.

Chapel Hill: UNC, 1967. 314 pages. First edition. Publisher's cloth; dust jacket. Near fine condition. Focused examination of the era of Reconstruction in North Carolina on the Lower Cape Fear River. Among the benefits of the the book is the exploration of how diverse activities and policies could be within the state, based upon place and time.

[Philadelphia and New York: Danforth, Bald & Co., c.1850-1853]. Engraving. 3⅝ x 11⅝ inches. Translucent bank note paper. Two vignette illustrations; certificate and accompanying stub are blank; binder's stab holes visible in left margin. Intact 19th-century certificate of deposit from the Bank of Wilmington and Brandywine in Wilmington, Delaware. The certificate was engraved by Danforth, Bald. & Co. and includes two patriotic vignettes: an American sailor in uniform, arm resting on a capstan, and a merchant ship in full-sail, the Flag of the United States unfurled. Interestingly, it retains its original engraved stub for recording the details of the certificate's transaction. An excellent example. Ref. American Bank Note Co and Predecessor Companies accessed online: "Danforth, Bald & Co. formed in 1850 from Danforth & Hufty; part became Danforth Wright & Co. in 1853; part became Bald, Cousland & Co.in 1853."

Minonk, Ill.: The Barbers' Compend Co., 1900. 133, [5 (index)]pp. First edition. 5¾ x 4¼ inches. Stiff maroon paper covers.  Spine and final leaf expertly repaired with tissue; some toning to back cover; Very good. Unrecorded barber's compendium of diseases with chapters on bathing and hygiene. Includes over 230 recipes for treating various ailments and skin conditions and the preparation of barber's toiletries. Medical treatments are offered for such diseases as chicken pox, smallpox, syphilis, German measles, scarlet fever, and cancer. Plus a section entitled "Notes on Bacteria," by Dr. Adolph Gehrmann, Bacteriologist for the Department of Health of Chicago. Not in OCLC. Three Broadsides. 10¾ x 5½ inches, 9¾ x 5¾ inches, and 10¾ x 5¾ inches. Various colored papers. Circular with folds and some creasing; one broadside edge-chipped and with a few closed tears; very good. Three broadsides issued by Mahan Brothers' Trained Animals of Charlton, Massachusetts for three separate performances of trained animals at the 1897 Vermont and New Hampshire Inter-State Fair. The Mahans' program of entertainment featured tricks performed five Patagonian Dogs-"only Dogs of this kind ever trained," "Sultan," the horse, and "Swiss Oxen, Champion Trick Cattle of the World." The broadsides are accompanied by a circular letter from the Mahan Brothers touting the animals' tricks and their association with the Orrin Brothers' Circus in Mexico. None in in OCLC and likely unrecorded.

Vibrant souvenir color view book of Havana, Cuba with over 50 illustrations depicting the city's principal government and historical buildings, street views, harbor, and other scenes. A view of the Capitol Building on Inauguration Day, May 20, 1929, suggest the booklet was published at this time, when Cuban President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) was beginning his second term in office. A view of Fraternity Square, with the Capitol in the background, touts "many great improvements" and "modernization" to Havana-"the nicest Capital of all Americas." Lecture 1 with a very heavy ink stain to to lower right corner of cover that affects margins of subsequent pages, but does not affect legibility of text whatsoever. Nine additional pamphlets, overall, in very good condition with minor paper flaws or light soiling. The true first edition of Behaviorism by John B. Watson, the founder of Behaviorism. Watson advanced the field of psychology as a science and anticipated the work of B.F. Skinner by more than 50 years. Watson's lectures were given in 1924 and 1925 at The People's Institute in New York City, an adult and immigrant educational organization. Gilt lettering to front cover dulled; heavy foxing to title-page and frontispiece and plate illustrations throughout. A sound copy. Robert Emmons Rogers, the playwright, was graduated by Harvard College and his play debuted in St. Louis and was later performed at the Greenwich Village Theatre. This copy's owner, one Lois Michel, apparently used her book as as a prompt copy for a local performance. She has written over the names of the actors from the Greenwich Village production (on a page listing the full cast) with the names of actors with whom she likely performed with or directed. Scarce/

Engraving by [Alexander?] Anderson ("Anderson S.") of a bust portrait of Benjamin Franklin shown wearing his fur cap and with a bolt of lightning in the sky behind him. The image is based on the medallion by Jean Bapitste Nini (1717-1786), a commission he received from Jacques Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont (1726-1803) in whose house at Passy Franklin lived.  Holden Sale 1503. Cochen del. F. Bolt Sc. 1822" and showing Benjamin Franklin with his iconic glasses and coon skin hat; based on Charles Nicolas Cochin's 1777 portrait. "This was probably the first likeness of Franklin taken after his arrival in France. It was certainly by far the most popular. The Canadian fur cap is worn in sturdy independence of fashionable usage, and the Doctor's mouth, and the glance through his spectacles, carry out the idea."
