Autograph Letter Signed by Nathaniel Irish (1737-1816) writing to former Revolutionary War General Andrew Porter (1743-1813), then Surveyor General of Pennsylvania, seeking an appointment for John Morrison as Surveyor of Huntington County. At the beginning of the American Revolution, Irish was a cannon founder; he later raised an artillery company before receiving a captain's commission. After the war, he became a founding member of the Society of the Cincinnati. Alexander Porter served in the American Revolution; appointed in 1776 Captain of Marines by Congress and later as an artillery officer under General Henry Knox. In Porter's role in the artillery he may have come to know Nathaniel Irish. Presentation Binding: full red, straight grain sheep; boards with gilt rolled edges; spine rules; marbled endpapers. Newspaper clippings mounted on verso of free, front endpaper, one loose clipping, plus one clipped illustration "scrap" mounted opposite. Gilt stamping on upper cover: "Maria A. Melvin." Spine nearly perished; upper board starting; lacking one tissue guard and possibly lacking one plate; fair. De luxe c.1840s-1850s album kept Maria A. Melvin of Massachusetts. The album comprises 26 engravings, 17 of which depict women. They include portraits; women character "types;" women literary characters; and genre scenes featuring women. Newspaper clippings on the endpapers supply some genealogical clues about the Melvin family as well as the Meacom family into which Melvin married. [St. Augustine:] The Florida Club, aft. 1873.  Series imprint on left: "St. Augustine Views, By the Florida Club." Light rubbing and soiling; very good. Photograph of the re-built city gates of St. Augustine, Florida, constructed in 1808 in the waning years of Spanish colonial rule. The gates were part of the city's outer defenses known as the Cubo Line. Behind the gate's two massive coquina stone block pillars stretches the causeway over the moat. The Florida Club, which published this view, was founded after 1873 by two early stereo photographers in St. Augustine, Charles Seaver, Jr. and George Pierron. The views were printed "in Boston and the first selections were for sale in St. Augustine and Jacksonville in early 1874... Some Florida Club views have been found on early-style square cornered mounts [e.g., exactly like the present example] but there is no evidence that any were sold before 1874. Diverse group of mid-Victorian scroll saw-related material including trade literature, marketing materials, and oversized pattern sheets for creating fretwork designs in the Queen Anne Revival style. In addition to a scarce 1881 trade catalog of scroll saws and lathes from A.H. Photograph of a group of eight military cadets in uniform at Cayuga Lake Military Academy in Aurora, New York. A shield hanging above crossed swords, identifies the academy. Two large American flags, Japanese lanterns, and a chandelier decorated with greenery hang from the ceiling. A martial panoply including drums, swords, and military caps and a rack of rifles with bayonets and dumbbells are displayed on the back wall. One cadet is identified as Walter Douglas Young, Cornell University Class of 1892. Young was born in 1870 in Aurora, New York. After graduating from Cornell, he worked as an electrical engineer for the B&O Railroad and was president of The Electromechanical Company in Baltimore. Medium-format tintype studio portrait of a Western woman wearing a kimono and holding a large folding Japanese fan behind her head. Studio props in the background create a "Japanese" scene: scroll paintings, a parasol, another folding fan, and two ovoid hand fans. In lovely condition; 5 x 3½ inches.

Faded, light surface wear to image; light staining in margins and on verso; else very good. Occupational photograph of hop pickers in Yakima, Washington taken by Washington State photographer Edward L. Meyer. The caption within the image reads: "W.R. Stewart's Hop Ranch, Natchees [Naches] Valley, Yakima, Wash." The image shows a group of 16 men and boys gathered around a large wooden container filled with hop flowers or seed cones; two men and a boy are seen holding hop vines, the latter two are seen in the foreground proudly wearing hop vines over their shoulders. Three large format photographs depicting the interior showroom and a trade show booth of New York scientific and technology publisher Spon & Chamberlain. The two photographs showing front and rear views of their showroom show multiple copies of the books they publish arranged on bookshelves along with books wrapped in protective paper. Paper wrappered publications or, possibly, unbound sheets are also shown. The office staff of three men and two women are shown behind a counter near the front of the single-room operation, sunlight streams into the room from behind. A painted window sign describes their focus on books on industrial arts and trades. The third photograph appears to show the company's trade show display booth on a raised platform. Long Branch [New Jersey], c.1902. [2]pp. Autograph Letter Signed. 8vo. Folds, very good. Interesting letter on the publication of magazine articles by attorney-turned-journalist and popular writer, John Paul Bocock (1856-1903). A Virginian from a leading family, Bocock earned a Master of Art's degree from Washington and Lee University in 1875 and subsequently studied law in Cincinnati. He practiced law there until 1883 when he joined the editorial staff of The Press in Philadelphia. In 1887, his journalistic career took him to New York City where he wrote for the newspaper The World and contributed poetry and prose to various magazines including Cosmopolitan, Leslie's Weekly, Munsey's Magazine, Harper's Monthly, and Harper's Weekly. In this undated letter, Bocock writes to a Mr. Monro, likely an editor at the North American Review. Bocock recommends two articles suitable for publication, one of which appears to be a legal excursus on expert evidence and relevant to a then-pending case: "Judge [John]… Leer más

[Pennsylvania, c.1902]. Broadside. Approx. 15½ x 10½ inches. Laid down on stiff board; fold lines; minor creasing; Very Good. Pursuant to an Act of the Pennsylvania Assembly concerning elections, the state required that sections of that Act pertaining to voting procedures, ballots, voters, and, election officers was to be published for distribution at polling places on election day. Here those pertinent sections of the Act are published as a broadside; at the bottom is this printed note: "Note.-At the opening of the polls in each voting place, copies of the above [Sections 21 to 27] must be immediately posted at or in each voting shelf or compartment...copies must be immediately posted in or about the voting room... Copies of the same must be given to any voter at his request." The broadside contains references to "this Commonwealth" and discusses proper procedures to mark one's ballot (only male voters are referred to) to prevent it from being invalidated-an issue which remains very applicable in… Leer más

[Le Roy, N.Y. and Toronto, aft. 1915]. One-page circular with related-ephemera. Very Good. Circular and small brochures promoting four patent medicines sold by S.C. Wells & Co. of Le Roy, New York: the herbal "Celery King"; "Shiloh" for coughs; "Begy's Mustarine," an anti-inflammatory; and Fenner's Golden Relief, a remedy for cuts and bruises. Brochures for Celery King and Begy's Mustarine include text in German, Italian, Polish, Swedish, Hungarian, and Hebrew. A small glassine envelope with promotional text has a sample of Celery King; its efficacy either then or now, unknown. Text mentioning M.M. Fenner Co.-sold to S.C. Wells & Co. around 1915, helps date this group.

Archive of completed and working copy manuscripts of 13 novels and 7 short stories by American architect and artist, Donald Morris Kirkpatrick (1887-1966). Whereas Kirkpatrick is best known as a prize-winning architect turned successful Bermuda watercolorist and printmaker, little appears to be known about his work as a writer. Accompanying Kirkpatrick's manuscripts are a similar, though smaller group of manuscripts for 15 short stories written by his wife, Renée Despard Kirkpatrick, a fellow artist whom he married in 1920. Three-quarter and cloth; gilt-lettered and with six gilt-stamped urns positioned as decorations along the length of the spine. Binding worn, front free endpaper with edge-chipping and partial separation at hinge, scattered finger smudges and signs of handling throughout text; good. A family presentation copy written by Samuel McCoskoy Cleveland (d. 1912), the author of this tribute to his father, Charles Dexter Cleveland (1802-1869), and given to Treadwell Cleveland Sr. (d. 1918), his brother. Charles D. Cleveland, a Dartmouth graduate, Dickinson College professor, and member of the American Philosophical Society, became principal at a Philadelphia school for young women in 1834. [Np. c. late 1850s]. Ninth-plate Tintype. 2½ x 2 inches. Book-form burgundy morocco case with gilt and blind decoration and silk lining; with wallet-style binding with brass closure. Tintype with brass mat and hand-tinting. Near fine. Diminutive tintype portrait of a man, with delicately hand-tinted cheeks and lips, mounted in a leather book-form case. The case housing the tintype is decorated using many of the same techniques used to create a luxury bookbinding: blind ruling frames on the exterior "boards," gilt rolled designs on the "turn-ins" and edges, and a silk "endpaper," which in this case folds over to protect the glass covered tintype. The tintype is an early example of the process; these were typically not case-mounted after the 1850s.

[Likely Sidmouth, Devonshire. Ca. 1820s]. [1½]pp. Quarto leaf. Manuscript in a very fine hand. Folds; small loss at one corner margin, one closed tear at center, very good. "For the first week I seemed (as in truth I was) a stranger in a strange Land... " Circa 1820s letter from evangelist J. A. Roberts written to his "Brethren," reporting on his difficult first preaching trip to Devonshire in southwest England. Roberts writes in a small dense hand. Basing himself in Sidmouth in Devonshire, Roberts describes his difficulties in getting there and his experiences preaching and visiting new chapels. His use of the term "chapel" for a local church congregation suggest he is not a cleric of the Church of England. Roberts begins with a nautical metaphor for his work as a traveling preacher: "After having been here three sundays I take this opportunity of writing to you. You may be assured that I have not much time to spare for it takes all my labor to keep out of shallow water & often when under ful[l]… Leer más

[Charlestown and Cambridge[port?], Massachusetts, ca. 1866-1886]. Eight wrappered notebooks, the smallest measuring 5 x 3 inches, the largest 6¾ x 4 inches. The notebooks are largely unwritten in; collectively, there are approximately 150 pages in manuscript. In very good to near fine condition. Eight handwritten notebooks kept by Dr. Edward Young White recording family memoirs, religious and scriptural notes, and genealogical research. The White Family were Scottish immigrants who settled in Worcester and Middlesex Counties, Massachusetts in the 1730s. Dr. White's genealogical notes record data going back to the 17th century. Births, baptisms, marriages, deaths, biographical information, and a family tree linking his father and mother, Samuel White and Susannah née Young White, are recorded. In one notebook, White records his own memoirs, e.g., "I once in Littleton (about the year 1850 it might have been earlier) in the old burying ground asked the old Sexton John Pushee as he was digging a grave,… Leer más

Mechanicsville, N.Y.: W.H. Sipperly, [ca. 1868-1870s]. 2½ x 4¼ inches. Carte de visite. Very good. The Saratoga Seltzer Spring Water Co. was founded ca. 1868 by the children of Henry W. and Caroline Livingston and their son-in-law, Johnston Livingston. This photograph shows the front of a large two-story brick spring-house and its entrance porch. The name of the business is on the brick below the cornice. Men and women stand out front or are seated in horse-drawn buggies. Other buildings are seen on the left, up a hill. W.H. Sipperly established his photographic studio in Schuylersville, New York, in the 1850s, and later expanded to Saratoga and Mechanicsville. He later moved to Vermont.

Fitchburg, Mass.: J.C. Moulton, Photographer, ca. 1870s. 3¼ x 6¾ inches. Card stock mount; imprint on label on verso. Very good. Stereoview photograph by pioneering Fitchburg, Massachusetts photographer Joseph C. Moulton who established his photography business in Worcester County in 1851. The image depicts the stone and frame building constructed at the summit of Mount Wachusett, the highest point in eastern Massachusetts. The image depicts a large group of mostly women and children on the porch or in the yard.

[Near Brighton, New York, ca. 1870s]. 3¼ x 6¾ inches. Card stock mount; caption in negative: "St. Regis Lake-Paul Smith's." Series title on recto. Later collection stamp on verso. Small chip to corner on verso; very good. Paul Smith's Hotel was founded in 1859 by Apollos Austin "Paul" Smith (1825-1912) as the Saint Regis House, one of the first wilderness resorts in the Adirondacks. The image shows a large boat house on Lower St. Regis Lake with the hotel-without its later additions-in the background. Before being destroyed by fire in 1930, the hotel hosted such guests as P.T. Barnum, J.P. Morgan, and three U.S. presidents: Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, and Calvin Coolidge.

View of the west side of Luzerne Falls today known as Rockwell Falls, the narrowest point of the Hudson River. The falls are located near Lake Luzerne, west of Glens Falls where this stereoview was published. Orr appears as a photographer in an 1871 Glens Falls directory; he was succeeded in that business by 1878. Ref.
