Descripción:
Boston: Published at the Anti-Slavery Office, 1849. Small octavo. Portrait frontis., xvi, 125, [5]pp. Publisher's brown cloth, gilt-lettered and embossed in binding. Small losses at ends of spine; tight splitting along joints; corner-tips rubbed; a very good copy. Fifth Boston edition of the first autobiography authored by Frederick Douglass documenting his early life on Edward Lloyd's plantation in Maryland, his pivotal battle with Edward Covey, the "slavebreaker," and his journey to self-education and self-emancipation. Published seven years after Douglass escaped slavery, Benjamin Quarles wrote that "the first-hand evidence [Douglass] submitted and the moving prose in which he couched his findings and observations combine to make his Narrative one of the most arresting autobiographical statements in the entire catalogue of American reform." Douglass's 1845 Narrative was followed by two subsequent autobiographies-My Bondage and My Freedom (1855) and Life and Times of Frederick Douglass (1881). This… Leer más

New York: Negro Universities Press, (1850, 1969). Frontis., [2], xiv, [1], [13]-204, [3]pp. Sm. 8vo. Brown cloth; gilt spine titling. Facsimile Reprint of "Third Stereotype Edition." Fine condition. Autobiography of author, editor, and antislavery activist Henry Walton Bibb (1815-1854), enslaved from birth in Shelby County, Kentucky. This 1969 facsimile reprint of Bibb's autobiography was reprinted from the third edition published in New York in 1850. "Although [Bibb's] highly regarded Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Henry Bibb, An American Slave was not published until the spring of 1849, Bibb began telling the story of his life before antislavery crowds in Adrian, Michigan, in May 1844. His story proved so poignant in its depiction of human suffering and endurance, so heroic in its accounts of ingenious escapes, and so romantic in its adventures in the territories of the West that the Detroit Liberty Association undertook a full-scale investigation to allay public incredulity, an… Leer más

London: John Murray, Albermarle Street, Publisher to the Admiralty, 1849. Thick 8vos. ix, 1400 pages. Bound in three-quarter calf, marbled sides, and black leather spine labels. From the library of Raymond L.J. Riling, his illustrated bookplate. bjcb 352255 A very handsome copy of this monumental biographical work; here bound in the nineteenth-century as two volumes. "O'Byrne was scarcely out of his teens and 'a civilian, previously unconnected with the Service' (O'Byrne, v), when he had the idea of compiling and publishing a record of the service of every living naval officer of the executive branch. Permitted access to Admiralty records, he worked at this for six years, publishing the first parts in 1845, and completed the volume of 1400 closely printed pages, on nearly 5000 officers, in 1849. The labour was great for the Admiralty records, his major source, were in a semi-chaotic state. He had extensive correspondence with his subjects, but he seems to have checked their statements against official… Leer más

Some rubbing to gilt on spine; lower tips bumped; very good. Extensive, statistical study of African American school attendance, using the entire State of Delaware as the sample case. The report examines school enrollment, issues of promotion and non-promotion, the "Attendance Problem", the causes of absence, etc. Negro School Attendance in Delaware was published during the era of racially segregated schools: "...the re-building of colored schools of the state will soon place in every colored community a modern, well equipped… Leer más

Near fine in a good dust jacket with age toning, chips and short tears along edges, and front flap clipped; lettering rubbed on cloth spine. Immediate post-World War II survey of the plight Blacks in Africa, the West Indies, Latin America, and the United States by Howard University professor, author, and Pan-Africanist, Rayford Whittingham Logan (1897-1982). Published by the African American publishing firm, The Minorities Publishers. Prof. Logan decries the legacy of over 400 years of slavery and the resulting treatment of Blacks as being inferior. "The raising of the status of the Negro will make it more difficult to argue that the Negro is by nature inferior and the growing body of literature portraying the achievements of Negroes will make it more difficult to carry on this propaganda based on ignorance."
