Hata, co-discoverer with Ehrlich of the "magic bullet" Salvarsan, and one of the first Japanese medical researchers to achieve international fame, was the first to use Salvarsan in the treatment of rat-bite fever. Extract from Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society 47 (1752): 565-567. 232 x 173 mm. In a Sammelband of extracts from the Philosophical Transactions containing 48 papers on electricity by Franklin and others, published between 1734 and 1764; complete listing available. Later half cloth, marbled boards, light wear, lower corners a bit bent. Light foxing and toning, occasional marginal dampstaining, but very good. A virtually impossible to duplicate collection of rare English-language papers on electricity from the key early decades from 1734 to 1764. It includes the first edition of four key papers by Benjamin Franklin, including the one on his famous kite experiment. Dittoed preprint of a paper Bethe published in the Annals of Physics 3 (1958): 190-240. Bethe, one of the most important nuclear physicists of the 20th century, received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1967 for his work on the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis. This rare preprint is from the library of physicist Owen Chamberlain, who received a share of the Nobel Prize in 1959 for the discovery of the antiproton. .

Kripke, one of the most important philosophers of the latter half of the 20th century, is best known for creating the now-standard Kripke semantics (also known as relational semantics) for modal logic, the kind of logic used to represent statements about necessity and possibility. Chirac taught at Montpellier from 1687 to 1708, then relocated to Paris where he enjoyed great success, becoming physician to Philippe d'Orléans and later to Louis XV. Faint stain in left margin, but very good. Portrait of Scottish comparative anatomist Robert E. Grant, a student of Cuvier, Geoffroy St. Hilaire and Lamarck, and an early supporter of the concept of the transmutation of species as set forth in the writings of Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin. In the 1820s Grant began a study of sea sponges, and published several papers demonstrating that these organisms were animal rather than vegetable in nature. In these studies Grant was assisted by the young Charles Darwin, who was then living in Edinburgh. [Grant and Darwin] would often go out on long walks together at the Firth of Forth, discussing marine biology and collecting marine animals.
