Cambridge, 1711. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fair. Presumed first edition. Lesser known work of the prolific classic scholar Richard Bentley (1662 1742) critic, and theologian. Considered the "founder of historical philology", Bentley is widely credited with establishing the English school of Hellenism. Bentley became Master of Trinity College, Cambridge in 1700. Old calf, detached, broken binding with some loose leaves and sigantures. (32), 310, (4) 460 (4). With full page engraving. Light staining to lower corner of Emendations.

NY: V.G. Audubon, 1849. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Very Good. First octavo edition. 155 plates by W. E. Hitchcock and R. Trembly after J.J. and J. W. Audubon. Some spotting here and there, and in Volumes 2 the outer edge/ bottom corner of the leaves running through page 110 are lightly stained affecting neither text nor images. Original, green, full leather binding, gilt-ruled, with the original owner name "Chas. Theo Russell" pressed in gilt to front covers all three volumes. Hinges have been recently reinforced and leather reconditioned. PROVENANCE: Heirs to Charles Theodore Russell (1815 - 1896), Massachusetts politician who served in both the Massachusetts House and Senate and as Mayor of Cambridge. He graduated from Harvard College in 1837, the same class as Henry David Thoreau and Richard Henry Dana.

Laid-in are two, ANS from Jones on Haverford College stationary addressed to "friend" dated Jan 19 and Jan 30, 1929 about details involved in Jones speaking appearance on "The Challenge of the Closed Door". Both notes are folded and in an envelope postmarked Jan 21, 1929 with Rufus' printed name and return Haverford College adress, hand-adressd to George Montgomery at West Philadelphia High School. envelope da Rufus Matthew Jones (1863 - 1948) was an American religious leader, writer, magazine editor, philosopher, and college professor. First edition, 8vo, vi +112, slightly soiled covers, no PONS or inscriptions, firmly bound, narrow brown stain on edge traversing pages 61 - 85 and a few tiny splashes of same throughout. Looks like it was a perfect Manhattan to us (and maybe the third one!).

Folio, 367, double-columned text, amply illustrated with decorated capitals and devices throughout, and 7 full page engraving copper plates plates (at 112, 118, 168, 192, 230, 244, and 276. There is also a loose plate, uniform in engraved format, at page 227. This rare edition reprints anti-Quaker treatises, emanating largely from Lutheran Christian theologians, that appeared in 1660 and assembled here for the first time. WorldCat lists 7 versions of this edition, 3 specifically as printed here. Most of the copper plates depict the activities of early Quaker preacher and missionary James Naylor ("mistakenly" identified as Jacob). Most notable is the one of him entering Bristol, England on donkey as the Savior Christ. Uncommon edition of 300 copies, this # 76, of a French translatiion of a collection of the Nobel laureate's poems that had either never appeared before in this form or that were written in the last years of his life. Large 8vo, printed on Papier Hollande, untrimmed sides in printed parchment wrapper. Internals fine, wrapper soiled, chipped at corners. Inscribed by one of the translators who bears the name Bjorson (grandaughter?) but who signs the inscription, dated Paris 1948, as "D. Bjornson Sautreau" suggesting that she may be the wife of her translator partner, the one better known for his French tramsaltions of Norwegian work in the late 40s/50s. Uncommon.
