A rare woodblock edition; the first edition appeared in 1669, with subsequent editions in 1711 and 1845. The book is a reprint of a so-called gazetteer - a local history divided into treatises on various topics - for the city of Kyŏngju in present-day South Korea (Kŭmo is an alternative name for Kyŏngju). Kyŏngju was the "Eastern Capital" of the Silla Kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE) and is today a UNESCO World Heritage site, replete with numerous historical remains such as temples, stone pagodas, imperial mausoleums, mounds, and castle sites. The treatises cover topics such as geography, famous families, palaces, temples, virtuous local women, and local lore. Kikuchi (fl. 1848-64), was responsible for starting a new age of Japanese veterinary medicine (see Alexander Kast, "Johannes Ludwig Janson, Professor of Veterinary Medicine in Tokyo in 1880-1902" in Acta med-hist Adriat (2010); 8 (1), p. 116). Before this work, all books on veterinary medicine published in Japan were either entirely dependent on Korean or Chinese traditions or were mere translations of Dutch texts that had passed through Dejima Island at Nagasaki. This book was the first work by a Japanese horse doctor to contain the author's own independent observations, gained by his own dissections and experiences. A rare Japanese edition of a manual for classical Chinese composition ascribed to Huang Jian 黃堅, allegedly of the Song dynasty. The earliest edition was published in China and has a Preface dated 1502. The book contains examples of classical Chinese writings classified by genre. These include poetry, such as rhapsodies (fu 賦), and prose, such as essays (wen 文), biographies (zhuan 傳), and stelae (bei 碑). The "ancient prose" (Ch.: guwen; J.: kobun 古文) advertised in the title of the book was pioneered in the Tang dynasty as a literary style based on the writings of China's pre-Buddhist past. Following one of the frequent fires in the famous pleasure quarters of Yoshiwara, often started by the prostitutes in an effort to free themselves, many brothels temporarily re-established themselves in other locations throughout Edo. It is the first masterpiece by Kita; Hillier, describes the present book as "an attractive colour-printed book of poets" (The Art of the Japanese Book, p. 640). The images of the 36 poets, each of which occupies two-thirds of a page, are finely printed in color using a series of woodblocks.
