All these works challenge the monetary preciousness usually associated with art objects. Produced in large numbers, they are relatively inexpensive to purchase. Theoretically, these books are meant to be more accessible than the art traditionally found in galleries and museums. A very rare edition of this collection of documents relating to seven men and their actions during the Imjin War and the Manchu invasion of Korea in 1636. The invasions of Korea, first by the Japanese in the 1590s and then by the Manchus in the 1620s and 1630s, were important moments in the course of events that led to the rise of the Manchu Qing empire in continental East Asia. The large-scale fighting and movement of troops from Japan and China into the Korean peninsula in the late 16th century mark a watershed in Korean history. The cost of the wars also severely weakened the Chinese Ming dynasty, which eventually collapsed in 1644, ushering in an entirely new balance of power in the region. Printed on grayish recycled paper. [Nara: published by the monk Kōei at the Kōfukuji Temple, 1213]. An extremely rare example of a Kamakura-era sutra printed in Japan on recycled grayish paper; this is the first specimen we have encountered. For an excellent discussion on the subject of recycled paper used in early Japanese printing, we have turned to the most interesting contribution of SOAS Prof. Lucia Dolce ("A Sutra as a Notebook? Printing and Repurposing Scriptures in Medieval Japan," Ars Orientalis, Vol. 52, No. 3, 2023): The term sukigaeshigami 漉返紙 (reclaimed paper) appears often in literary works of the time, indicating paper made by soaking scrap paper and other fibers and then spreading them thinly. "In 1989, a year after his death, a multitude of works were discovered in Paul Thek's New York storage unit. Among hundreds of sculptures, paintings, drawings, and notebooks were three sheets of paper with etched images. Each was printed from small metal plates, a traditional form of printmaking that has almost disappeared in our digital age. First edition of this important landmark in the history of the science of perspective and a precious copy from the library of Charles of Valois (1573-1650), finely bound in contemporary green morocco with his arms. Charles was the natural son of Charles IX and was also Count, then Duke of Angouléme. He served in numerous military campaigns and was imprisoned for a number of years for having taken part in several intrigues. Released in 1616, he was appointed ambassador to Germany in 1620.
