Manuscript gazetteer describing Chosŏn Korea, which was referred to as "the East" (tung 東) or the "Eastern kingdom" (tungguk 東國) before the 20th century. Our manuscript was written between 1694 (we find that date in the text) and 1895, when the eight provinces shown on the map on leaf 45b were abolished. The word "gazetteer" is used in reference to a genre of East Asian historical and geographical texts known as (di)fang zhi (地)方志 in China and ŭpchi 邑志, both translating roughly to "local treatises." [Seoul]: Pich'ŏndang 丕闡堂 Building, Sŏnggyun'gwan [today's Sungkyunkwan University], 1872. First edition and very rare; WorldCat lists only the Berkeley copy. "Scroll" is clearly used here as a figure of speech, as this is a codex-style book, printed using movable (metal or wooden?) type in 1872. Sungkyunkwan, established in 1398, was the highest educational institution in Chosŏn Korea. It is now the sight of an eponymous university. The location of the printing of this book was Pich'ŏndang, a building at Sungkyunkwan. In the interview described in the title, the young king Kojong (1852-1919, ruled 1864-1907) was querying his subjects on Confucius's Analects. Undated edition of this collection of lists giving biographical data for notable personages from Korea, the "Eastern Kingdom." The individuals are divided into categories, such as "high officials," "famous servants of the throne," and "scholars." The last chapter of the book contains a list of institutions. The chapter on scholars opens with a brief biography of the famous medieval scholar Sŏl Chong 薛聰, who "explained the nine classics in the local language and in addition wrote history and prose" 以方言解九經又製史文. The statement about the use of "local language" (i.e., Korean) to read the classical Chinese Confucian canon comes from Samguk sagi 三國史記 [Historical Record of the Three Kingdoms, 1145] and is reproduced here for a Chosŏn readership. A rare metal movable type edition printed at the Ministry of Justice in Seoul in 1903 using a font cut in 1816. The text was originally compiled in Chosŏn Korea on royal command in ca. 1440. The earliest edition that can be confidently dated was printed by woodblocks in Kyŏngju in 1536. The text explains the descriptions of crimes and punishments contained in the Great Ming Code, which was the penal code of the Chinese Ming empire (1368-1644). This book, in the form in which we now have it, is the result of a series of revisions in the late 14th century. It represents an important moment in Chinese legal history, as a kind of legal Renaissance, in that it was deliberately modeled on the centuries-old Tang code, whereas the preceding Mongol Yuan empire had not had an official Chinese legal code. Printed in black ink with 12 illustrations in red ink. 82 folding leaves. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers (some foxing), orig. stitching. [China]: [1921?] A rare edition of a Daoist scripture received by Dong Lin 董淋 through so-called planchette or spirit writing. The "great unity," referring to the pole star, is an important deity in Daoism. In spirit writing, the text is received by a medium who writes characters that are then interpreted. Our book contains explanations of schematic figures which are not regular Chinese characters. There is also a series of diagrams in red ink that might be Daoist talismans. The upper margin contains a commentary by Huidi. A stamp on the outside cover states that you are not allowed to read the book without the proper training. A note at the beginning of the book specifies that the text was received at the spirit-writing altar in Ji'nan in the 12th month of the gengshen year, which should correspond to early in 1921. Rare edition of this guide to a famous Japanese Pure Land mandala. In the Preface to our book, dated 1702 (Genroku 15), Gizan recounts how his old friend, the lay believer Mujin 無塵, who had obtained a supreme paint powder in nine shades as a gift from the deity Kuma no gongen 熊野権現 when a rock split next to his house, wanted to use it to paint a mandala for Chion-in temple 知恩院, the center of the Pure Land school. Mujin was allowed to see and copy old mandalas that were specifically taken out of storage for him. Gizan, who was affiliated with Chion-in, saw the mandala and noticed many differences with transmitted copies of the same motif. Osaka: Shibakawa Mataemon 芝川又右衛門, 1888. First edition of this beautifully illustrated natural history book. It is rare: WorldCat 673623988 lists only the National Diet Library copy. Kondō (fl. 1830-50), a student of the prominent Kyoto painter Kishi Ganku (1756-1838), became well known by the early 1830s and was mentioned in the Heian Jinbutsu Shi edition (a Japanese Who's Who of prominent people). Kondō's art was acknowledged to have surpassed that of his teacher, but sadly Kondō died relatively young, sometime in the mid to late 1850s. While Kondō was primarily a painter, he did execute some woodblock illustrations. Scarce photographic artist's book by Braco Dimitrijevic (b. 1948), printed in an edition of 500 copies. It was published by Jürgen Wesseler's Kabinett für aktuelle Kunst in cooperation with the Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD. The book documents the artist's correspondence with the scandalous Lord Weymouth which then led to Dimitrijevic's visit to Longleat to see Weymouth's erotic murals. The final pairing of photographs juxtaposes Longleat House and the modest building in which Dimitrijevic's studio was located. In fine condition.

First edition of this fragmentary medieval rhyme book, reproduced here in a facsimile lithographic reprint of Wang Guowei's handwriting. Rhyme books are a kind of Chinese dictionary, in which characters are arranged according to their pronunciation. Because of this arrangement, they can be used to study the sound system of the language used at the time they were compiled. Characters that no longer rhyme in modern Chinese might still do so in medieval rhyme books, providing precious data for historical linguistics. During the Qing period, the earliest rhyme book accessible to scholars was Guangyun 廣韻 [Expanded Rhymes] from 1008 CE. In the early 20th century, even earlier sources came to light, most prominent of which was Qieyun 切韻 [Spelled Rhymes] from 601 CE. Ten erotic cards, issued together, each in the tanzaku ban format, and accompanied by their original color-printed wrapper. Tanzaku cards were popular in the Meiji era (1868-1912); see Rosina Buckland's "Erotic Art of the Meiji Era (1868-1912)" in Timothy Clark et al., eds., Shunga. Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art (British Museum: 2013), pp. 454-55. The upper panel of each is very finely color-printed with saturated inks, embossing, and rich use of metallic pigments, revealing the Japanese printer's art at its best. They all depict men and women engaged in a series of sexual acts. These volumes are very finely illustrated with the theme of "snow, moon, and flower." The artist was very accomplished, and the images are highly complex and skilled. The volumes use almost all of the techniques that make Japanese illustrated books so remarkable. This late shunga is richly colored and employs bokashi, the delicate variation of shading of pigment within the image; blind-embossing; and the very ample use of gold, silver, and copper pigments. It was edited and designed by György Galántai (b. 1941) of the Artpool Art Research Center, a haven for Eastern European avant-garde movements established in 1979 in Budapest. Jipposha (active 1844-49), was the author of two other magic books, both also published in the 1840s. Following the very witty preface, the author describes 35 tricks, each depicted in the text. The illustrations are particularly lively and clever. The texts, produced during the Jin empire, comprise chronologically arranged state documents in various genres, including letters between the Jin and the Song. "Some materials do not have counterparts on the Song side, and since they originate with Jin writers, they can be used comparatively alongside Song sources. The collection is of very great value for research on the history of the Jin-Song conflict" (Yao & Yao, Tang-Song lishi biji luncong, 726-27). "Shōchan was 'born' on January 25, 1923 (the twelfth year of the Taishō period: the 'Shō' in 'Shōchan' is the 'shō' in Taishō, so the boy was the same age as the era), on the children's page of the new daily (later weekly) tabloid Asahi Graph.
