First edition of this work by Johann Heinrich Boecler (Cronberg 1611-1672), published posthumously by Samuel Schotten from Boecler's notes and with Boecler's introduction. Boecler studied in Strasbourg under Matthias Bernegger and became a philologist, lawer and professor of history at Strasbourg. Later he was appointed royal historiographer of Sweden. Boecler wrote extensively on Classical military history and on the works of various Classical authors, including Herodotus, Polybios, Flavius Josephus, Suetonis and Tacitus and is considered to be one of the most important political historians and philologists onf the 17th… Leer más

François de Los Rios (Antwerp 1727 - Lyon 1820) was born in a family of merchants. He began his working life as a bookseller's clerk in Paris and Italy; later on he visited England and the Netherlands and in 1767 he finally settled in Lyon as a bookseller. During his time in Lyon he sold many important books, especially Italian and Spanish books coming from the libraries of the Jesuits in Lyon, Tournon and Macon, and from the private libraries of the abbés Piole and Gindre. A detailed annotated bibliography on the history of philosophy by the noted Professor Burkhard Gotthelf Struve (1671-1738), who was appointed librarian at Jena in 1687. But, as Petzholdt writes, more of a literary history than a real bibliography and especially valuable for the study of the German school of philosophy. Jasenas, in 'a history of the bibliography of philosophy' says: "Several editions of Struve's bibliography were published during his lifetime; the one (fifth), which appeared after his death in 1740 and was edited by Ludwig Martin Kahle, is still extremely useful to the historians of philosophy" [Petzholdt p. 459, Jasenas, p. 55]

Red leather spine label with gilt titling.Uncommon and scarce catalogue of the important library of Carolus Major (16.. - 1766). Major, a well-known book collector, was a canon in Mechelen and known as "the Van Hulthem of his time". The sale of his collection was one of the major sales in the Low Countries of the period. Archer Taylor mentions the catalogue: "Catalogues are of course very good reflections of tastes and interests in book-collecting. One example that concerns books considered as physical objects without regard to their contents will be sufficient. The Bibliotheca ex omni facultate librorum quos reliquit reverendus dominus Carolus Major (Mechlin, 1767: at [the Lindesiana copy]) contains (pp. 655-658) a "Musaeolum peregrinantium, seu bibliotheca ambulatoria in formis minimis," listing 58 titles. Description of 956 early books - with prices and synoptical Index. Original 3/4 calf binding, marbled bds. (boards and spine rubbed). A remarkable collection with a chequered history. Originally formed by Thomas Park, the collection was sold to Thomas Hill for an annuity, then sold to Octavius Gilchrist a grocer of literary leanings who finally sold it to Longmans. This ambitious catalogue fared badly and the remaining books were sold at auction in 1818. Many of them ended up in the Bridwell library. The catalogue however, is still cited as a reference work for early English Literature.

Auction catalogue of the library of J.W. te Water (1740 - 1822), professor at Leiden University from 1785 to 1815. The first catalogue covers Te Water's Book Collection, divided by size. The second catalogue includes autographs, manuscripts, coins and medals, portraits, maps, plates, bookcases, paintings and other items.

All in marbled boards, uncut and unopened. A nearly complete series of this early eighteenth century magazine. A complete series should consist of 27 volumes and a separate index has been published in 1717. Among the many scholarly journals published all over Europe in the decades around 1700 Jean Le Clerc's Bibliothèques, published in Amsterdam, occupied a special place. Jean Le Clerc (1657 - 1736), a theologian and refugee from Geneva, published three periodicals: The Bibliothèque Universelle et Historique (1686-1693); the Bibliothèque Choisie (1703-1713) and the Bibliothèque Ancienne et Moderne (1714-1727). Walch (1693-1775) was professor extraordinarus of philosophy in Jena. The present work, a bibliography on the Church Fathers, is one of his most important works. See the note in Bohn, Guinea Catalogue # 6473: " 'With respect to the Fathers in general,' says Prof. Marsh, 'the most information comprised in a small compass, is in the Bibliotheca Patristica of Walch. It relates to the Lives, the Writings, the Editions, and the various uses of the Fathers, and likewise enumerates the authors who have explained the particular subjects of enquiry"

First edition of this history of the Royal library in Stockholm. The history of this library goes back to the 16th century when King Gustav Vasa started collecting books. The Royal Collection formed the basis of what is now the National Library. Much of the library went up in flames during the great palace fire of 1697 when 17,286 bound volumes and 1,103 manuscripts were lost. Only 6,700 volumes and 283 manuscripts survived. Celsius (1716-1794), was a librarian and wrote other histories of important libraries. [Almquist 2629].

One of the most important French eighteenth century auction catalogues, compiled by Gabriel Martin and considered the best of the many catalogues he compiled. It consists of 4414 lots, and includes manuscripts, maps, fine bindings and has significant holdings in history. According to Bléchet the principal buyers were Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, comte de Toulouse, and Karl Heinrich, comte d'Hoym; unsold lots were retained by Du Fay's son.
