Paris, De Hansy, 1782. 18mo. iv, 209, (iii) pp. 2 engraved frontispieces and 72 engraved plates. Slightly later full red morocco binding signed Bozerian, covers, spine and inner dentelles gold-tooled, moire endpapers. Edges gilt. A lovely copy.This illustrated guide includes prayers for the Mass, accompanied by a depiction of the corresponding ceremony performed by a priest assisted by one or two acolytes. Above the altar, relevant scenes of the Passion are shown. Such guidebooks date back to the mid-seventeenth century and the publication of Tableau de la Croix by François Mazot in 1651. Some of these missals, Like Mazot's publication, are composed of images and text produced entirely with engraved plates. The present missal however, comprises both letterpress printing and engraved plates. 1803. (1803). Second illustrated edition, (Madrid), imprenta de la viuda de Vallin, calle de Bordadores, 1813. 88pp + 12 plates. In a hcalf binding. Marbled bds. (bds rubbed & damaged, but repaired). Decorated spine (rubbed). (2nd flyleaf has a small tear). On an early system of stenography, specifically devised for the Spanish phonetics. The author, a member of the Economical Society of Madrid and of the Academy of San Fernando, proposes a syllabic system of transcription, whereas the systems previously elaborated were literary. In the introduction the author discusses in detail the stenographic methods elaborated in England and France and their drawbacks concerning their application to the Spanish language. The last paragraph discusses the form of the pens conceived by Marti for his tachygraphic system. These pens are depicted on plate 12. Of this title several editions as well as a translation into Portuguese were published.

1708. Hamburg, Liebernickel, 1708. Folio. 18 ff; 726, 623, 195pp. Engraved allegorical frontispiece. Contemporary full vellum binding. Vincent Placcius (1642-1699) was a prolific writer. The present work is the chief early work on books published anonymously or under pseudonym. It was published nine years after Placcius's death and identifies 2777 anonymous works. The engraved frontispiece shows how the learned author or editor, standing in an academic library, takes the masks from the faces of several authors and attaches them to a cord. The cord with the masks refers to "Zettelkasten" to which single slips of paper with textual quotations could be flexibly attached, facilitating sorting and storing of text. A very good copy. [cf. 1827. Amsterdam, P. Meyer Warnars, n.d. (1827-1830) Oblong small folio. Contemporary marbled boards with original leather lable, title gilt lettered inset into front cover. New endpapers with the backstrip sympathetically replaced. Title + list of subscribers + 314pp. (xiv, 15-314)pp + 1 leaf "Narigt" [postscript]; 93 lithographed plates. Preceding the titlepage is a manuscript inscription as prize presentation to the student Pieter Barbiers, 1 June 1836. The author, Johannes Jelgerhuis (1770 - 1839) was celebrated in his day as a leading Dutch play actor, painter, costume designer and engraver. A scarce and uncommon book - the subscriber's list records 125 copies only.

Marie-Louise Jaÿ (1838 – 1925) was a French businesswoman who started work as a shop girl. With her husband Ernest Cognacq she created the La Samaritaine store in Paris, which grew into a chain of large department stores. The present catalogue shows what was for sale in 1905.

Nineteenth century half cloth with marbled boards. Titleshield on spine. Nice wide margins. (some waterstaining in the lower margins of a couple of quires, not affecting text & some foxing).
Bigmore & Wyman say about this work: "Twenty pages are devoted to the history of printing, the remainder of the book being of a practical nature. Bertrand, who died in 1808, is only remembered by this work, which is a very ingenious and well-written treatise on the origin, progress and mechanism of printing." And Barbier in his French Letterpress printing says: "A competent manual covering composition, presswork, organization of the shop, and inkmaking... The work was dedicated to 'Pierre Didot, fils ainé, citoyen français, Premier imprimeur de l'Europe', a phrase which was apparently resented by Bodoni. The Traité was also… Leer más

Original half calf (bottom of spine of plate volume slightly damaged), marbled boards. Nice clean wide-margined copies. From the library of K. Boehm. Poly. Landesinstitutes Techn. Institut Boehm. Staend. Rare copy of the first edition, complete with the plates (lacking in the BNF) of Vallées treatise on perspective and the mechanism of vision. Louis-Léger Vallée (1764-1864 was a French engineer. [cf. Poggendorf II, 11168; Kemp p. 231; Vagnetti Flb 24].

Paris, chez l'auteur, 1665. 8vo. Engraved frontispiece, titlepage, (xiv), 140 pp, engraved title plus 69 plates numbered 1 - 67 (plates 6 & 7 present twice; plate 67 is double-page). Modern full calf pastiche binding, spine with five raised bands and red titleshield. Some copies have overlays on plate 50, some don't, ours has no overlays. (paper slightly browned).
Abraham Bosse (1604-1676) famous for his etchings was also the first teacher of perspective at the Academy Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture that was founded in 1648. Bosse, a mathematician and geometrician, was extremely interested in the work of Girard Desargues and published several works on perspective. The present work was published in 1665. He wanted it to be the definite text on the subject that he taught, but he was expelled from the Academy for lack of flexibility before its publication. Most of the 47 pages of the introduction deal with the principal errors that painters can make if they are not aware of the rules of perspective.… Leer más

This chapbook contains an alphabetical list of dreams and their interpretations. It is an adaptation of Vulson de la Colombière's treatise that was first published in 1660. The text is unchanged from the original but there is less. The present chapbook contains 12 pages and the original had nearly 100 pages. The last lines of the work contain the 27 most commonly pulled numbers of the lottery. Is there a connection with the dreams and the lottery? They are often associated but the dreams descriptions of not have a number in this chapbook. [c.f. R. Gabriel Peignot (1767-1849), a prolific scholar and librarian in Dijon, was one of the most important contributors to the development of historical bibliography. First edition of this classic guide to book collecting and bibliography, published in 754 copies only. The edition was sold out in six months (...der obschon es in einer Stärke von 754 Exemplaren gedruckt worden war... in weniger als sechs Monaten ganz vergriffen gewesen sein soll.... (Petzholdt, p. 91)). Peignot concentrates on Latin, Greek and French literature and provides advice to book collectors on the most important authors in each field and the best editions of their books. Bernard Lamy (15 June 1640 – 29 January 1715) was a French Oratorian, mathematician and theologian. His best known work is the Traité de Mécanique (1679), showing the parallelogram of force. The parallelogram of forces is a method for solving (or visualizing) the results of applying two forces to an object. The last (folding) plate shows perpetual movement.

Numerous mistakes in the page numberings. Some copies have an index at the end, ours does not. First edition. Le Gallois, noted 17th century Parisian bibliographer and author describes both the libraries of antiquity and of his time. Excellent accounts of the important public and private libraries of Spain, Germany, the Low Countries, England, Scandinavia and France. He has included chapters on the origins of printing and proposes a new classification system. [c.f. Bigmore & Wyman, I p. 429].

In France on May 19, 1874, a law was passed entitled an "Act in relation to children and women under age in industrial pursuits. This law prohibited the employment of children under twelve years of age, except in certain special cases, limited the hours of labour of children and women to 12 per day, prohibited the employment of children under twelve years of age and all women below ground in mines, restricted greatly Sunday and night work, and made numerous other provisions concerning periods of rest, security against accidents, etc. This was a major improvement in working conditions but not sufficient. It was amended on 2 November 1892. Children of either sex, younger than 16 could work no more than 10 hours a day. 1619. In Venetia, Giacomo de'Franceschi, 1619. 4to. [24] ff; 219 ff; 27 ff, titlepage; 243 pp (with several errors in the pagination). Hundreds of woodcuts in the text. Contemporary blind stamped vellum binding. All edges stained red. A really nice and clean copy. Third collected edition of Serlio's seven books on architecture. The first edition was published in Venice in 1584. A reprint of the 1584 edition, with an additional `Discorso' first added in 1600. Each book has a separate title-leaf, printed within a woodcut border; books 1, 2, 4, 6 and 7 have the imprint `In Vicenza...', with books 2 and 4 dated `1618'. This edition may originally have been issued in 1618. Leaves 17 (first sequence) and 24 (second sequence) are misnumbered `71' and `42', and pages 86 and 209 are misnumbered `85' and `219'. Serlio(1475 - 1555) is renowned for the present work which includes volumes on the classical orders, perspective, domestic buildings and churches. Continuation of Tijdschrift voor Boek- en Bibliotheekwezen. Volume 27/1943 contains the registers on the Noord- en Zuid Nederlandse Bibliografische tijdschriften (Bibliographische Adversaria, Tijdschrift voor Boek- en Bibliotheekwezen & Het Boek I-XXV). Continued in 1971 as Quaerendo which is still being published. Very important periodical in the Dutch book history. Ulrich & Küp say: Rare books, bibliography and fine printing are under discussion. Much attention naturally, is paid to Dutch and Netherland printing. Text in Dutch and English.

A lovely card in various colours showing a trompe l'oeuil of various 'magazines'.Le Charivari is a French illustrated satirical journal that was published between 1832 and 1937. In 1838 a first edition of Le Charivari is published in Brussels. The French Charivari was carried over the border into Belgium. A local artist made copies of the illustrations on a virgin lithographic stone. The paper was then published a few days later. The editorial content was used without important changes but the advertisement part was adjusted and specifically printed to satisfy the Belgian readership. This was most likely an unauthorised publication of course with subscribers. (ex-libris H. van Krimpen on inside front cover).Scarce specimen of this important American press founded by Theodore Low De Vinne (1828 - 1914). He was known for the high quality of his work. He was also one of the founders of the Grolier Club. From the introduction of the present specimen: "The De Vinne Press as it now exists is the outgrowth of a small printing-house established about 1836 ... These specimens show that its present collection of printing types, some in large but others in limited quantities, which have been diligently gathered from leading foundries of this country and Europe to please the taste of many customers, has received and is receiving a generous appreciation. William Edward Painter was active in London in the period 1830's - 1850's. The present typespecimen contains five different types: Pica, Small Pica, Long Primer, Bourgeois & Brevier and includes prices for the cost of printing in the various types given in 10, 24, 36 & 64 page runs. Hermann Zapf, born in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1918, taught himself calligraphy from the books of Rudolf Koch and Edward Johnston. He has had a distinguished career in type design and typography. Hermann Zapf is recognised as one of the world's leading type designers and typographers. In his books Zapf shows an extraordinary sense for the balancing of type and space. He often uses a calligraphic letter, a handwritten word, or a chaste ornament (perhaps blind-embossed) to set off his otherwise perfectly simple, harmonious title pages. The present work, privately printed by Stempel, contains 78 typographic layouts, many are tipped-in specimens in colour. Includes explanation of types and layout for all specimens, which are set in 16 languages from types in Stempel's archives.
