The book is more than just a "it's cold down there" story. In part, to escape monsters in her personal life, she volunteered to work at a South Pole reserach station. Spoiler alert, it didn't work. While there she performed a biopsy on herself to diagnose breast cancer. Being trapped by weather for eleven months and being the only doctor within six hundred miles required starting chemotherapry via satelite communication with experts. A child of immigrants who, during a 35 year military career, rose to the rank of four-star general. Powell was the first Black secretary of state (2001 - 2005), was US national security advisor (1987- 1989) and became chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989 - 1993). The Joint Chiefs of Staff position is the highest military position in the US Department of Defense. A must read for those wishing to run for public office.
